.NET Development Encryption
In order to encrypt information saved by a user to a textfile, I found a nice example using tripleDES and it works fine. The only problem I see is that the numbers I used for the byte array that makes up the key and IV are easily viewable by using a disassembler like ILDASM. I used the community edition of dotfuscator, which does scramble up the classes and stuff, but those values are still readily seen, even if it is now harder to actually find them. So my question is how can you do reliable encryption in .net, when a determined hacker can simply find the keys you used, and then reverse the encryption Have you considered DPAPI http: ...Show All

.NET Development .NET UI Application Crash
Hi, We have a vb.NET client UI application which calls a number of web services. The application is intermittantly crashing completely without any evidence of an exception etc. The application is single threaded for the most part, the only area that deviates is a class managing serial port comms via win32 calls. (we do not use p invoke..) I understand the most likely cause for an unexpected termination of this nature is threading - more specifically that referencing UI elements unsafely... I can say after a very large code review that this does not take place. Can anyone provide any advice on what might be the cause or where else we might lo ...Show All
Smart Device Development is there a standard way to add/remove items from a listview in details view
When developing for the smart phone, is there a standard UI guideline for adding and removing values from a listview On a device with a pen, I think I would add 2 buttons (i.e. Add & Remove) and some text boxes above the listview, as well as checkboxes on the listview for the delete functionality. What should the UI look like and what should the softkey menus be to meet the standard Check out the following article on msdn http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp url=/library/en-us/dnnetcomp/html/grfcraftingsmartphoneuserinterfacesusingnetcompactframework.asp As the article mentions, A gre ...Show All
Visual Studio Team System Exclude EnumStorageShouldBeInt32 for importing C++ enums?
I got hit with the "EnumStorageShouldBeInt32 " rule ( http://www.gotdotnet.com/team/fxcop/docs/rules.aspx version=1.35&url=/Design/EnumStorageShouldBeInt32.html ) One area that I don't think this makes sense for is when using enums to import native C++ DWORD-based enumerations. For example, I want to import kernel32!ContinueDebugEvent, which takes a DWORD for its 3rd parameter, and that can be set to one of several strange values. I'd like to hide those values behind an enum like so: public enum ContinueStatus : uint { DBG_CONTINUE = 0x00010002, DBG_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED = 0x80010001, } [ DllImport (Kernel ...Show All
Visual Studio LocalReport Error - A data source instance has not been supplied for the data source
I have just installed VS 2005 RC. Tried using the LocalReport control using the exact sample code provided in the help for the Render method. I keep getting an error during the LocalReport.Render method call - InnerException = "A data source instance has not been supplied for the data source". The dataset and table supplied is valid as it works with the Reportviewer control. Is there something I am missing or is the sample code wrong I have managed to get to the bottom of this one. LocalReport is particular abount the name one passes when adding a new dataset. It must be of the form DataSet_tablename ...Show All

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks OK, you're in VS, right Save your file (File/Save xxxx.dtsx) Save a copy of your package to the SQL Server (File/Save Copy of xxxx.dtsx As...) Visual Basic How to make a query based on variable amounts of criteria
Hi, I am building a database in Access, and one of the main functionalities of it is to be able to display recrods based on certian true/false criteria. My problem is that there could be several hundered different combinations of criteria so I cannot make a seperate query for each possibility. It is laid out with 4 main true/false questions which I will probably use toggle buttons for. If any of these are pressed, then there are 5+ true/false check box criteria beneath each. Can anybody tell me the best way to structure to generate a query based on all of the criteria Thanks, Andrew hows your c# ...Show All

Visual Basic WSE, Datasets, help needed asap!
Ok here is my problem, I've been working with the WSE Quickstart examples, I was able to write my own code to do what I need.. however I need a dataset to be returned.. I've tried a couple methods here and can't figure it out, can someone help me with whats wrong 1. Obtained dataset from SQL server, converted dataset into xml, returned the class object which contained a 'xmlstring' and 'checksum'. This resulted in a 'Server unavailable' 2. Return the dataset directly instead of a class object. This resulted in a 'Server Unavailable' 3. I've tried the following "fix" to get a dataset, still no luck. Visual Studio Express Editions Visual Basic .NET 2005 Express Edition
Ok, this is yet another "can you run VB2005 with a remote database" question with a slight twist. What if i create my projects in VB2005 and then open it in Visual Studio 2003 to do all the stuff I can't do in Visual Basic 2005 Thanks! I haven't tried but would not expect it to work. VB2005 is in line with VS2005 so you are more likely to be able to share projects between 2005 versions than 2003 and 2005. ...Show All

Visual Studio 2008 (Pre-release) ASP.NET 2.0 Async Pages + WCF = async exceptions?
There seems to be an interaction problem between ASP.NET 2.0 async pages and WCF service operations. Has anyone else seen this work or fail ASP.NET 2.0 has a cool feature called async pages which provides very efficient handling of asynchronous methods in a page. This feature is perfect for issuing multiple web service calls, letting them run in parallel, and waiting for them to complete before pages render. The feature is built on top of the familiar .NET AsyncPattern and is explained well here . The big appeal here is that this approach doesn't waste threads. WCF supports the .NET AsyncPattern too. You can generate a ...Show All
