DirectX10 only on Vista?

Should not Microsoft known if Windows XP should be updated to run DirectX10 Otherwise i have to upgrade to Windows Vista Home
Premium to play the latest game with DirectX10 and Browse with Windows Aero and use the Windows Media Center like feature in Windows Vista Home Premium.

Harald,
I don't understand your point. Aero and the Media Center-like features are Vista features. You would have to upgrade to Vista to get Vista features, just like you had to upgrade to XP to get XP features.
And, as ZMan noted, MS stated from the very start that DirectX10 was Vista-only.

The only announcement I have seen so far was from the Wine project. The talked about the possibilities to port a future D3D10 support for Wine to Windows XP. I had a short conversion with one of theses guys some time ago. At this point they have still worked on D3D9 and haven’t even started with D3D10 for Wine. Therefore I would not bet that munch money that we will see result’s very soon. Additional Wine uses an D3D to OpenGL wrapper. Such a solution could never be 100% perfect as both APIs have some differences.

Not true there is infact a Direct X 10 in development but it will probbly be a third party software
the card that suports the DX3d10 is the Nvidia 9800GTX the first of many ATI is also comeing out with a DX10 driver for XP
the first test on the game "Crysis" were done on the Nvidia 7900 witch was modifyed to perform the DirectX3d10 prodicall
the drivers will be out for release in late 2007 with the lunch of the new cards
i cant remember the site thats doing the third party stuff but when i do i'll update my post

I would love to see this information, especially the bit about ATI coming out with a DX10 driver for XP.. and yes it will have to be 3rd paty becuase MS have stated they will NOT be back porting.
Yes there are ways of getting similar effects - there was a great talk last year at GDC about how to do some of the DX10 type things on a DX9 card but they were not as efficeint as using real DX10 hardware.
Also since this post was created one of the guys from the flight sim team has posted this

I hope this helps.
Take care.

Ok, thank you.
How does aero(or whatever it's called) work, will it be based on D3D9, 10 or something completly different
And what about openGL, will it work just like it does on XP

No, never.
Direct3D10 (as Peter correctly calls it - there is no such thing as DirectX 10) will be Vista only *and* will require a new graphics card (none of which have been announced yet) that meets the D3D10 standard feature set and has a Vista driver.
Until Vista is prevalent on machines in the gaming market segment you will probably see games that support both D3D9 and D3D10, probably with the D3D10 version having more eye candy and/or better performance.

Microsoft know, and it has been very very well documented that DX10 will never run on XP.
Aero is also not availalbe on XP
However Aero and media features do not currently require DX10 hardware. They use DX9 on vista.
Right now there are no DX10 only games. Given the low market penetration of Vista and DX10 hardware I would be surprised to see and DX10 only games for a while. Its most likely you will see games that work on DX9 and 10 - probably with some enhanced features or performance on DX10.

Yes the aero shell is built on D3d9 EX (the ex is the version that is modified slightly to allow it to run on the Vista driver model).
OpenGL - I believe the current plan is that it somehow layers over DirectX and the feeling from the OpenGL community is not very positive http://www.opengl.org/discussion_boards/cgi_directory/ultimatebb.cgi ubb=get_topic;f=12;t=000001. However Vista is still in beta so any perf issues are early days. I'm not an OpenGL person so I'm not really following the progress on that issue.
