.X and multi uvs and texture layers.

I have been using the Microsoft .X exporter for 3d Max and notice that it still doesnt support multiple uvs or multiple texture layers. This is very irritating for me and countless others. There are .X exporters made by third parties which support multiple uv sets, but not multiple texture layers per mesh. I have read that this is all because of X file limitations. My question is when will the Direct X 3d format support these two basic features and when will they be implimented in the Microsoft Direct X exporters

Thanks for any information.

I think this limitation is because of the limitations in the default x file format - don't forget that x files are extensible.  You could extend the exporter to add your custom x file sections that address your needs and add the functionality to your x file reading code.

As the man said, the X file format is extensible, but I agree with you in that this feature (layered textures using different UV sets) is such a basic need of almost all artists, that it should be built into any X file exporter provided by Microsoft or anyone else for the major art packages (Maya, Softimage XSI, etc). It is a waste of resources to ask each individual studio to solve this problem on their own. I would also mention that the documentation for the Maya exporter provided by Microsoft (http://msdn.microsoft.com/archive/default.asp url=/archive/en-us/directx9_c_Dec_2005/DirectX_Extensions_for_Alias_Maya.asp) fails to make clear its limitations with regard to exporting UV sets, which causes developers to waste countless hours researching the issue to find out whether it is unsupported or if the mesh is simply set up incorrectly in Maya. Microsoft needs to do a much better job in this area.

There doesn't appear to be much happening to the .x file format. I know severl of the MVPs have asked about it so hopefully we will get some more information in the future.

Until then requests like this should be cc'd to directx@microsoft.com - nto all forum requests get seen and passed to the team

Thanks for the reply, but I am already aware of the limitations of X file format. My question is when will these limitations be fixed

Until the standard x format can support these features without users writing their own extended importers and exporters  there will be no exchangable x files with these features.

    Any info
