MDX: Desktop or Laptop?

Hi all,

am planning to purchase a new pc and I can't decide between laptop or desktop, my main concern with a laptop is performance and developing games with Managed DirectX and shader v2.0 or even v3.0

Anyone developing on a laptop Specs Graphic card

Thx a lot

I have a dell inspiron 9300 with the optional GForce Go 6800 which is Shader 3.0 compatible. Steve likes his Toshiba Tecra http://www.steve-lacey.com/blogarchives/2005/04/what_tabletpc_s.shtml also Shader 3.0 in a tablet format.

There's no perf issues on my dell, though it will run you over $2k. Beautiful widescreen too. Its also very big - I found impossible to use on a plane when the person in front thinks they are important enough to recline into you even though its only 1pm!

The other thing to think about for the future is DX10 which will need a new graphics card. So do you want to upgrade again in the next 12 months

DX 10 presentations are linked here: http://forums.microsoft.com/msdn/ShowPost.aspx PostID=97912

Short answer: Yes, DX 10 will have a Managed API as well as a native API.

That's the main problem with Dell laptops, they're all 17" with the specs that you need (too big and heavy), I wish the Inspiron 6000 (15.4") could have better specs like graphics card (max. is 128 ATI X300) etc...

And DX10 coming out, hmmm, I may have to postpone that even further then or get a desktop and upgrade the video card ...

Any idea what will happen to Managed DirectX when DX10 is released, will there be a managed version directly btw, I check the Z Buffer on a regular basis so let us know ;)

    Thx
