MSDN Library May 2006 update is failing

I just received the MSDN library May 2006 DVD, and it detects the previous library (Jan 2006), begins to install, and then prompts for the Visual Studio 2005 DVD.

I insert my Visual Studio 2005 Profesional Edition DVD, but the Library install just keeps re-prompting to insert the Visual Studio 2005 DVD.

How should I complete the Library update

Thanks,

Jim

I had been having the same problem, and had a thread going about it in the Managed Newsgroup vstudio.setup without any useful input. Your solution worked for me, too. Just out of interest what is the device letter of your DVD Drive - I have mine moved to X:, and I wondered if this could be relevant.

    Hi Jim,

Thanks for your posts on MSDN forums. It seems like the physical problem of your VS 2005 DVD. Would you please try the disk in another DVD-rom

I sincerely hope this can be of help. If anything is unclear, please don't hesitate to get in touch. Any comments and further feedback from you will be welcome and highly valued.

    Regards,

    Cleo

I am having the same problem. Why does the disk want the vs install disk anyway. ITS A LIBRARY UPDATE. Its a DVD. Why can't MS distribute DVDs that contain all the stuff that's needed. I am a consultant and this is costing me money

Mine is on D:, this should be fairly common...

I'm using XP SP2, VS2005 on DVD from my msdn subscription (disc 3070), then the MSDN Library for Visual Studio 2005 on DVD (Disc 3076, which is Dec 2005, I don't have a Jan 2006), then May 2006 DVD.

I did a minimum install for all.

I also have the same problem. I reported it on http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/productfeedback/default.aspx. You can vote for it there, because bugs with more votes are more likely to be fixed...

Yes, D: is the default (if you only have one hard disk partition). I was wondering vaguely whether some idiot had inadvertently hard-coded the DVD drive letter in the install code, but this is obviously not the problem. In the early days of "real" installation packages (as opposed to ones that just copied everything to a specified folder) there were a fair number which allowed you to specify where to put things (Drive and path) but subsequently assumed that they were on the given path on the C: drive. I have always preferred to use multiple partitions (typically Boot/System, Programs, and one or more data drives), so I got used to this problem.

I'm on Vista Ultimate x64, and this is happening to me, even when I run the Setup as Administrator. My DVD drive letter is F:. My system is a dual boot, Vista on C:, XP 64 on D: and a data drive on E:.

    Pissed - wasting time...

    Hi,

I managed to install the library.

I first copied the complete DVD to my hard drive. This succeeded without errors. I then started the install from there, without the DVD in the drive, and it finished without problems.

    Hi,

I am having the same problem, but with a version of Visual Studio 2005 Professional just purchased two weeks ago that is on CD, not DVD. When I attempt to install MSDN from the MSDN CD #1, eventually I am prompted "Please insert the disk: Visual Studio 2005 DVD". As I have stated, I do not have Visual Studio on DVD and cannot complete the installation.

In my case, this is obviously not due to a malfunctioning DVD drive. The fault, dear Brutus, is not our stars, but in the installation software.

    Hi there,

We have recently tried following scenarios but couldn't repro the problem you are seeing. Can you please look at these tests and let us know if your setup steps are different so we can try to repro. Please write exact repro steps and operating system and how you got your MSDN Library.(either downloaded ISO or CD/DVD subscritpion)

    Platform: Windows XPSP2
    1. Installed VS 2005 Pro from DVD with default options.
    2. Installed Jan 06 library (Full installation)
    3. Installed VSTF ENU (May 06) library from DVD. (Full installation)

Result: Works fine without any errors. Setup does not prompt for VS 2005 Pro DVD/CD

    Platform: Windows 2000 Server SP4
    1. Install VS2005 Pro (CD) with all default options.(only step 1 from VS screen, No Documentation install)
    2. Install MSDN Jan 06 QTR Library - Minimum Install.
    3. VSTF Library 50727.137 using DVD - Minimum install.

Results: Works fine without any errors. Setup does not prompt for VS 2005 Pro DVD/CD.

    Platform: Windows 2003 Server SP1
    1. Install VS2005 Pro (DVD) - Default option.
    2. Install Documentation step 2 of VS 2005 - Full Install.
    3. Install Jan 06 - Full Install from DVD.
    4. Install VSTF 50727.137 - This will update VS 2005 Library using DVD.

Result; MSDN Library updates completes without any error and works fine. Setup does not prompt for VS 2005 Pro DVD/CD.
