hi.
i have a setup with several local clients to the database and a remote client that is connectected over a 2mbit dsl line. now, i know that 2mbit isn't _that_ much, but is it really necessary for a 'get latest version' to take up to 20 minutes the ss database is only 10 mb in size...
what options do we have in order to make this thing a little faster

VSS extremely slow over internet

Hi,
That comparison has been posted on this forum, too, but it seems that you have to read it "cum grano salis" http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx PostID=21541&SiteID=1

Thanks for the question. Are you using Visual SourceSafe 6.0, or Visual SourceSafe 2005

the vss internet plugin is not an option: it is simply to limited in functionality to be useful. the remote users must be able to delete and remove files, and they must be able to create new projedcts. all of this cannot be done using the internet plugin.
i'm not running antivirus software on the server, and there is no antivirus software running on the remote clients.
what other options are there to speed this up why didn't you implement the full feature set in the internet plugin if that is so much faster

This was just the problem we experienced. We finally had to give up using the VSS internet plugin.
Currently we are evaluating the VSS addon tool SourceAnyWhere as a replacement for internet access. It runs very fast and stable over internet. So far we are very satisfied with this product.
From my view, SourceAnyWhere is a good choice if the remote users require high performance for internet access.

This page:
ms-help://MS.VisualSourceSafe.v80.en/dv_guides/html/e8ebb18b-64be-49bb-866b-f902bbc2a9ee.htm
shows a similar architecture for SourceSafe LAN. I believe you also call it the LAN Accelerator. Is this also a way to get reasonable performance over a WAN
Thanks.

Can SourceAnyWhere work without VSS
Thanx.

In another thread, Microsoft's Alfredo Mendez says the VSS HTTP connection is "30 to 50%" faster. This is nowhere near enough of an improvement, so I probably won't even try it. I've used SourceOffSite a bit (it works pretty well) and VSS Connect even less (it seems to work and is really cheap at $30/user).
Here is a review of various VSS remoting software packages:

Mark, the image on the page is slightly incorrect. It misses a direct connection between SourceSafe LAN plug-in (ssscc.dll) and the VSS database. In LAN case, ssscc.dll uses the LAN Service to speedup certain operations, but it still makes direct accesses to the VSS database.
Thomas, projects can be created with VSS Internet plugin by adding VS projects and solutions to source control, or by checking in files in subfolders. Also, Delete/Rename functionality is supported, at least propagation client->server (I think this was added post beta2). I have no idea what could cause such slowdowns (real-time antivirus, network drivers or beta2 bugs would be my guesses).
Jones, SAW cannot work without VSS on the server (you'll need a VSS database). I believe on clients you don't need VSS, but for this you'll need to check with Dynasoft.

I'm also experiencing very slow performance of VSS over internet. The version we use is VSS 2005 (beta 2).
Is this caused by bugs in the beta version

Thomas,
Are you running any antivirus software on the client or the server If so do see any difference in performance if you do not use antivirus on both client and the server
< xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
You could use VSS Internet plug-in. It should make it much faster for DSL/Cable modem connection. Try using this if you can run IIS on the server.
