Call me crazy, but i thought there was a feature that mentioned the new VSS being able to use a SQL Server Database as it's datastore instead of the old file system structure.

You are probably thinking about Visual Studio Team Foundation, which is a complete suite of lifecycle management tools that does include a Source Control solution based on SQL Server.
