Cannot get local version of MSDN to be called up from VS 2005

Hello,

I have recently upgraded to VS 2005 release candidate. I then installed the full 2.6GB version of MSDN locally. I need to figure out how to get the local version of MSDN to be accessed from VS 2005. I have specified "Use local first, then online" as my option for help. Whenever I double click a class name and hit F1, I expected to get the local definition of that class. Instead, it goes through the relatively long process of looking online for it. Is this a bug or a feature

I reported this as a bug also.

TIA for your help,
Joe Barry

    SmileHello,

Yes. This has been resolved. Here is a copy of an email thread between myself and jeremyj@microsoft.com explaining the resolution.

    Thanks for resopnding.

    Hi Jeremy,< xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

    Problem solved !!!

I had installed the release candidate, and on the same day, I received my MSDN subscription. I installed the MSDN from the subscription ( from October ). I then expected that this version of MSDN was designed to go connect interactively with the new VS2005 RC1. It wasn’t. I have since uninstalled that MSDN library, and then installed the one that came from the RC1 download, and the world is right again.

I appreciate your time and effort on this matter.

    Joe:
Sorry for the delay in replying. Are you still unable to access local help If so, can you tell me whether (a) you installed the version of MSDN that was part of VS 2005  and (b) whether you had a beta 2 version of MSDN installed previously on this machine.

Great! I'm going to mark this as answered, then.

Hi - think I am having the same problem but cannot resolve the same way.

I installed a copy of VS 2005 Standard that I got at the NYC Launch gig at the Sheraton last week. The help dvd has a scratch and my pc can't read it.

Downloaded msdn version and it will not connect to my VS install.

    Any ideas on this one

    Thanks,
    Andrew

I am having the same problems with running MSDN October 2005 help files local when launched from VS2005 professional.

I chose a custom install and selected to install all of the MSDN DVD locally on my HD - close to 1.9 GB.

Now, everytime I press f1 in VS2005, MSDN i started and starts looking on the web. If I select Local Only then I get the error:

The information you are trying to access could not be found. Various events could have caused this error.

You have chosen to use local Help only for Search and F1 results, and the topic could not be found in local Help.

This error can be caused when local Help has not been installed or only a subset of local Help was installed.

    <snip>

If I start MSDN manually, it seems to work fine against the local files.

How can I make my MSDN work locally from within VS 2005

    Regards
