Problems with some links

I am having problems accessing some links in the Help System installed on my pc.
Some links don't make the mouse pointer turn to a hand and are unclickable, this occurs in both the Visual Studio 2003 and Express help systems.

Problems with some links

Like if I start up the Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 Documentation, choose Visual Studio .NET in the contents now on the help page under "In the Visual Studio Documentation" the first four links are clickable, and the rest are unclickable. The pointer doesn't change into a hand, it just behaves as if its normal text.

I have installed VS2003 and then C# Express onto an XP machine and evertything works fine. It sounds like something is corrupted in your VS2003 MSDN installation. When you reinstalled VS2003, did you also remove and then reinstall the MSDN library

OK, Roger Haight has pointed out that the first four links on the Visual Studio .NET page point to links in the same vsintro7.hxs file. The last four point to links in other hxs files in the Feb.2003 MSDN collection.
Here are two things to try:
    1) Empty your IE cache, then restart the docs and try the links again. A full IE cache is known in some cases to cause broken link behavior.

    2) If that doesn't work, look for vbcon.hxs or dv_vjsharp.hxs on your computer under the MSDN folder, by default I believe it is \program files\msdn\feb2003\1033\. If these files are not present, then that explains why the links are broken. If they are present, then I can only suggest that you try uninstalling and reinstalling MSDN yet one more time.

The one that came with Visual C++.net 2003

The last time I only reinstalled the MSDN Library, although before that I reinstalled VC++2003 and the MSDN Library.

I've emptied the cache, also checked for both vbcon.hxs and dv_vjsharp.hxs and they were present. Still had the problem, so I uninstalled and reinstalled MSDN, and the problem still exists. Thanks for your help so far, is it possible its a mshelp problem as all the express editions are also affected

    A few more questions:

Was VS2003 Help working fine before you installed Express on your machine
Which Express products did you install
Did you install the MSDN Express Library

  • GaneshPalwe

VS2003 Help was having the same problems before installing Express, I had reinstalled VS2003 C++.NET to see if it would fix the problem but it still suffered from it. Although the first time I installed VS2003, I remember it working correctly, but don't recall when exactly when it developed the problem. I've installed both Visual Basic .NET and C++.NET express, and I already own Visual C++.NET 2003.

Can you provide us with a specific topic title and link text where this happens so that we can see if this case is reproducible on all computers or unique to your computer

  • Thomas Fairris

In the Visual C# Express main menu, under Help > About, it should say:

    Microsoft Visual Studio 2005
    Version 8.0.50727.42  (RTM.050727-4200)
    Microsoft .NET Framework
    Version 2.0.50727

If you don't have the RTM version, then I would STRONGLY urge you to first uninstall your beta versions and install the RTM versions of Express and the MSDN Express Library. I am pretty sure this will solve your problems. Be sure to use the beta uninstall tool to remove the beta versions:

Do you have the RTM versions of all the Express products and the RTM version of the MSDN Express LIbrary

  • Adria Grau Rovira

For VS 2003, are you using the original MSDN that came on the CDs, or a more recent version of the MSDN library, and if so, which one
  • GeorgeLuo

I did what you said and yes they come up as RTM.
