I am having a (for me) the serious problem that the local help in VS2005 does not display any .NET content. Using VS2005 TS RC1, but the same happend before with VS2005 b2.
- only Help on Help and Refactor show up in the index.
- dynamic help and F1 help with standard VB code give no results
- in Tools, Options, Environment, Help, I have 'try local only'
- I cannot use online help, because it's way too slow for me here
I suspect that somewhere in some settings or registry the URL to the integration of the VS2005 MSDN help is broken. The stand-alone MSDN library 2005 works fine using the url ms-help://MS.MSDNQTR.v80.en/dnmsdn2/html/msdnstart.htm
I would really appreciate if someone could help me out here; I already tried lots of things but none helped.
Thanks in advance,
Ralf.

Local help not available in VS2005 TS RC; please help.

Could you please
1. Go to Add/remove programs, choose MSDN library for VS 2005 and click "Click here for support information" What is the Version
2. Uninstall your current version of MSDN library and install the one that comes with VS RC1 that you have install lately.
Don Brinn
My assumption that you have older MSDN version was incorrect.
(you do have some left-over help namespace from MSDN Beta 2 on your machine, but it is probably not the root of your problem) You also have some non-microsoft help namespaces on your machine - C1.C1BarCode,etc, DevExpress.DXCore, SecureBlackbox.NET.
I think you MSHelp run-time bits might be broken. Could you please try to
1. rename the folder C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Help
2. Find MSDN library for VS 2005 in Add/Remove programs and run Repair (first click Change/Remove, then choose option Repair)
3. If problem is not resolved, try to run nsedit tool again.
Thanks
Maria

I installed VS 2005 Team Series RC0 from MSDN subscriber downloads. I have installed MSDN October 2005 from the MSDN DVD and installed the MSDN VS 2005 documentation using the VS 2005 Team Series RC setup dialog (Step 2).
I hope this helps you to help me...
Thanks in advance,
Ralf.

here is what happened:
1. Renamed c:\programme\gemeinesame dateien\microsoft shared\help
2. Repaired MSDN VS 2005
3. Starting nsedit.exe, I get the following dialog box:
Runtime error!
Program: ...nsedit.exe
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way. Please contact ...
4. Trying to start MSDN VS 2005 via start/programs, I get the following dialog box:
Microsoft Document Explorer cannot be shown because the specified help collection 'ms-help://MS.MSDNQTR.v80.en' is invalid.
5. Trying to start MSDN Oct 2005 via start/programs, I get the following dialog box:
Cannot find one or more components. Please reinstall the application.
6. To help myself, I reinstalled MSDN Oct 2005 via Repair.
7. After that, MSDN oct 2005 and MSDN VS 2005 work again via start/programs, BUT: still no help within VS 2005
8. I tried using nsedit.exe again. It runs, but trying to the attachment process does not work again.
So, basically, I back where I was before.
Attached is a list of the files I have in the Help and Help 8 directory. Still hoping for help,
Kind regards,
Ralf.

Adding steps that Ralf found to resolve this issue
"1. I used Sysinternal's Filemon to find out what file is affected when I get the permissons error dialog box.
2. C:\Dokumente und Einstellungen\Administrator\LokaleEinstellungen\Anwendungsdaten\Microsoft Help\nslist.hxl was kind of suspect
3. I renamed nslist.hxl to nslist.hxl.old and - voila! - everything is in order again; I reinstalled MSDN VS 2005 and both in VS2003 and VS 2005 (now using VS 2005 Professional RTM) Dynamic help works fine."
Also dropping "good" nslist.hxl from other machine (where Help is working) is another workaround

1. The MSDN library for VS 2005 version is 8.0.50727.26.
2. I did uninstall the MSDN library for VS 2005 an reinstalled it with the MSDN library for VS 2005 residing in the VS RC1 DVD 'msdn' folder. Nothing changes here, the version number stays the same.
Regarding leftovers from VS beta2, I used the VS beta 2 uninstall tool before installing RC1.
I still hope for help,
Kind regards, Ralf.

Dear Maria,
thanks for the nsedit tool. However, the described method shows no results:
- I dragged the MS.MSDN.v80 namespace into MS.VSCC.v80
- a msgbox appears, I click OK
- a progess bar appears which only goes through about 10% and then quits.
After the operation, MS.MSDN.v80 does not appear in the Help plugins box and VS 2005 stays as it is; without local and dynamic help.
Thanks for your help, but there must be something more and I am desparately looking for a fix to this annoying problem. I'd appreciate if you could look further into the issue and find a solution for me.
Ralf.
