RC1 - VSS Admin Password?

I just installed RC1 VSS. It's seems to have a password in mind and I have no idea in the world what it is.

At times it seems to disregard it's password and do what I need to do. But it won't let me change the admin password without know what it was.

It's sort of that same old story.... I receive the message - if you've forgotten your password, consult your system administrator. But I am the system administrator :(

RC1 - VSS Admin Password?

    Alfredo,

I always use the same password and the system does not know it.

Secondly, this weekend my XP system had a catastrophic failure. It was one of the strangest bugs I've seen and there did not seem to be a way to recover from it so I reinstalled the OS and TFS RC1.

I have numerous disk partitions with the intent that even if the system disk is corruptedthe other data partitions will still be there, a strategy that has saved me many times. Given that lately I've had Beta-II , RC1 and then a re-installation of RC1 on my system I am unsure of what survived and what didn't. RC1 did not go into the partition it was in the last time.

My system is a single user system and there is no team other than me. So if there was an old password in an old datastore, it would have been the password that I normally use and it's not.

This is exactly what I have been doing and is the utility I have been using.

Tonight I deleted the old database and created a new one. It lets me do what I want as the administrator EXCEPT change my password. When I go to change the password, it asks for the old password. I supply the password I always use and since they don't match, it will not allow me to change.

This is the same problem I've had to begin with.

    Alfredo,

The component with the password problem is VSS, the administrator account. I have a DVD dated 9/9 and labeled "Team Suite". Build 50727.26 ENU. VSS is a component on the DVD.

Actually I did some limited testing last night and determined the following. It apears that I, as administrator and can what I want to EXCEPT change the password.

This would seem pretty innocuous but if I begin using VSS like it's supposed to be used and I start keeping my code in it, there is no guarantee that I have the privileges to get myself out of a bad situation. I fear a state change... I guess.

    Thank you,

    Renee

    Hi Renee,

Glad to hear things are working better for you.
You should be able to change the password through the SourceSafe Administrator program.

To do so, go to Start -> Programs -> Microsoft Visual SourceSafe -> Microsoft Visual SourceSafe Administration
Then open the database in question, and log on as the "Admin" user (notice that is "Admin", and not "Administrator").
If this is a new database, by default the password is blank.
Once in the administrator, you can change passwords via the "Users" menu

    Best regards,

    Sorry about your bad experience.

    I'm confused about your reply.
You say that you installed TFS, Team Foundation Server.

Which product are you having trouble with:
SourceSafe 2005 or Team Foundation Server

The title of the thread says "VSS", so Jeff and I assumed it was SourceSafe, but from your description it seems that you are actually using Team Foundation.

    Can you clarify, please

    Hi Renee,

If you created a new database, the Admin password is blank (default).
Let the 'Old password' field blank in the ChangePassword dialog if you want to set a new password, and only type in 'New Password' and 'Verify' fields.

If you don't have a new database, then you must already know the old Admin password, as it was required when you opened the database with SSAdmin, right

    Renee,

Passwords are based on the SourceSafe store, not the version of the software installed.

If you try to access the same SourceSafe store with a SourceSafe 6.0 client, do you not get prompted for password for the same user

    Renee -

I'd suggest posting this question in the VSS forum. Those of us working on Team Foundation don't spend too much time using VSS and as such you'll probably have better luck over there.

I've also forwarded your question on to the VSS team so hopefully one way or another you'll get your question answered.
