does anybody know how to fix the following issue:
Installed retail 2005 standard studio version on a machine which did have the beta version, yet it was removed with the tool provided my MS.
The installed finished without issues, however as soon as I try to use the dynamic help's search button, the MS Document Explorer crashes. Hence MSDN library is halfway useless, because I can't search.
If anybody has any ideas.... other than wiping my HD, please let me know
thanx

MSDN (or MS Document Explorer) crashing like crazy

Good morning Michael. Is there any chance that you could uninstall the product and reinstall again I looked through this thread to see if you had tried that but I didn't see any evidence that you had. That is what I would do in this case.

Before re-installing all of Visual Studio, try repairing MSDN for Visual Studio 2005 from Add/Remove programs.
Thanks,

To my knowledge, the problems with dexplore crashing on search are due to either to leftover beta bits on the machine, or users installing the October 2005 MSDN instead of the VS 2005 MSDN that came in the box. The issue with SQL Server books online is another possibility here. Did you install SQL Server 2005 with VS
The people who could really help here are all on vacation this week and will be back in the office around January 3rd. If you can hold out until then we can help you figure this out.
One question to clarify: Is it only the Search button in Dynamic help, or does the Search button on the dexplore toolbar also crash

I can understand your frustration. Without fully investigating your issue, I can't determine whether you'd actually be forced to wipe your hard drive. We have Support Engineers who are specially trained in helping to resolve these types of problems. I encourage you to visit http://www.microsoft.com/services/microsoftservices/srv_support.mspx for a list of support options that you may want to proceed with to try to resolve this problem.

yes, I have tried both repairing and reinstalling. No success. I would appreciate if you had any other ideas.
thanx

Have you tried repairing Microsoft Document Explorer 2005 This may help. Here's how:
Reboot your computer, and then try using Dynamic Help again.

I received the same error when I tried to manually enter the PID. Perhaps you could try selecting the "Let Microsoft locate the product identification number (PID)" option when prompted by the Web site. Doing this installs a file on your computer to collect your PID and other technical information that may help resolve your problem more quickly. Alternatively, you could try calling a Support Engineer at +1 (800) 936-5800, option # 3, then option # 2.
Sorry for the inconvenience.

Unfortunately, other than uninstalling/reinstalling Visual Studio or reformatting your hard drive and reinstalling Visual Studio, I can't think of any other solutions. I checked our Knowledge Base but didn't find any possible solutions posted there either.

i figured that, but you have to admit that it really doesn't speak a whole lot of a product when you have to wipe your HD to actaully use it for what it was designed.
is there any way that I can send somebody the dumpfile so it can be reviewed and maybe somebody will figure out what is wrong
scottt40
I had done that as well to no avail.
However in the meantime I had to rebuild my laptop anyway, so I am back up and running. Thanx for all your suggestions and the effort. It's nice to see somebody from MS trying to help... doesn't happen too often and it is appreciated

ok this is really irritating.....
I went to the website you suggested and seemingly I can email tech support for free for two incidents...
however when I enter my product id
77633-235-1485881-41827
it tells me that it doesn't match the version i selected. however there is no choice for VS2005 standard....
so what do I do now

the point is though that I didn't buy a defective product just so I can purchase support for it.
I don't think that it is acceptable to expect me to pay for any kind of support at this point of time, considering that your product is not working correctly right out of the box...
please advise...

I used the typical install out of the box, hence I never installed the october MSDN.
I don't think I have installed the SQL server, however I see a SQL server 2000 on my laptop. I assume it was installed as a part of our ERP client package. That server installation is only about 20 MB so I don't think I have the full fledged server installed.
I can certainly wait, because I don't want to reformat my HD and start from scratch.
And finally the the answer to your question is that it crashes on both
