VS 2005 (Final) Install failure -- Setup Failed on component Microsoft Document Explorer 2005

I have ran the clean up tool to remove the previous beta version of VS 2005.  So please don't suggest that.  I still receive errors while trying to install Visual Studio 2005 Final version.  This is the error log file:

I'm having Document Explorer screw up during installation to. My log files give no useful information, and I never had any other version of VS on here. I repaired .NET Framework, Windows Installer, etc., did full uninstalls / reinstalls, nothing works. This SUCKS

I can't get Server Explorer to show by either going to view and clicking on Server Explorer or the keyboard short-cut. I had a pre-release version of VS 2005 and had a problem Installing the release version of VS 2005. Which I fixed. But what is up with Server Explorer not showing

Take a look at dd_dexplore* in your temp folder and search for "return value 3".
Copy and paste the lines above and below it in a reply so i can see why the document explorer failed.

    Greetings,

I have been trying to install VS 2005 Pro and get the same error as all of these other posters: ***ERROR EVENT*** : Custom Action Failure:Action ended 4:04:37: InstallFinalize. Return value 3..

I have tried everything that I could find posted on this or any other forum, including the VS uninstall and troubleshooting tools. Nothing posted here or elsewhere helped.

Naturally, I was a Beta-2/CTP user. I uninstalled everything, including production versions of .NET and any other development tools.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. My next step is to open a support incident, but I am afraid of the "reformat my hard drive" answer.

    Regards,

    Jerry Metcoff

This solution was given to me.

Install the 'Document Explorer' directly from the VS2005 installation DVD

    under vs\wcu\Dexplore

    start Dexplore.exe

VS 2005 (final) should install after this is done.

  • Chandra

I had to repair .NET Framework 2.0 in addition to above to go past this issue.

    Hi,

I have the same problem as described above - The Document Explorer failing to install.

Installing the Document Explorer manually from wcu/DExplore  as well fails.
A part of the log file - just before rollback - is appended below.

    Please help!

it might also be worth checking that you have the security settings for the program files folder on your hard drive configured to allow full access to the SYSTEM profile. This is all it took for me, having tried everything else.

    In XP Pro SP2:

Program Files - right click - Properties - "Security" tab - Add SYSTEM - ok - Edit SYSTEM (give full control) - also check the "Inherit from parent the permission entries that....." - click OK.

Hopefully there will now be no more difficulty installing Doc Explorer

Hello, I got the same problem that the Document Explorer failed, and this error is solved.

Some infor in my log here:

    07/25/06 14:17:22 DDSet_Status: BeginTransaction()->IHxRegisterSession::CreateTransaction() returned 8004036e.
07/25/06 14:17:22 DDSet_Error: BeginTransaction()->Attempt failed because another transaction was running.

If you get same error ( IHxRegisterSession::ContinueTransaction() returned error code 80004005. )
Then here is the fix: (I found this fix here: http://www.helpware.net/mshelp2/h2reg_FAQ.htm)

    1) On the machine in question, can you see if we have the following file:
    Rgstrtn.lck
    This file would be under:
"%APPDATA%\Microsoft Help" or %temp% or directory under %temp% or
    "\Documents
    and Settings\All Users{.Windows}\Application Data\Microsoft Help"

    2) Also, see if ANY directories exist under "%APPDATA%\Microsoft Help" or
    "\Documents and Settings\All Users{.Windows}\Application Data\Microsoft Help", they
    need to
be moved to another directory for this error to go away, a rename to
    another name
will not work, the code is checking the existance of ANY directory
    regardless of
name and the directories "%APPDATA%\Microsoft Help" or "\Documents and
    Settings\All
Users\Application Data\Microsoft Help" having any directory under it will
    not resolve this error.

After go through above 2 steps, my problem is gone!

    Hope this will help.

I believe the problem occurs when you do a fresh install. After install has finished setup of .NET 2.0 Framework, it must break something and then when it attempts to register a component ("Microsoft.VisualStudio.Zip.dll"), it fails because the framework or broken. Simply repair the framework and restart setup and it should work fine. Dunno how Microsoft didn't catch that one!

I tried everything  listed in this thread except repairing .Net 2.0  Once I repaired it I was able to install.  Thank you!

I had the same problem i went to the directory E:\msdn\DExplore and installed the Microsoft Document Explorer first and then went ahead to install VS 2005. I still dont know why it gave me the problem in the first palce.

I think i found the problem, and the solution.

My situation was that i had B2 and i uninstalled to install the Final. It would fail on the document exporer numerous times.

One thing i noticed is that the setup did not install windows installer 3.1 because it was already installed.

I went to \vs\wcu\msi31 and installed the hotfix there. It had to stop and restart the msi installer service. After that hotfix finished installing the document explorer installed with out any issues!

so give it a try and let me know

    cheers,
    Antonis
