I suspect my problem is not unique. I have tried everything i know to uninstall the previous versions but have come up empty . I get a message that i need to uninstall
SQL server Express Edition, tools express edition
SQL native server
Device Emulator 1.0
Visual J# resdistributable.
I have tried the manual uninstaller http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/support/uninstall/ but no luck.
It is strange, i can't find any documentation which has the actutal manual steps (e.g. directories to delete, registry entries...)
Errors range from wanting msi's under c"\ temp\IXP000.tmp" (jsredist.msi & vs_emulator.msi) to problems in "datastore" and also an insert ".net framefwork 1.0 sp3 developers dusk".
>> Anyone have something which will nuke vs2005 without me having to nuke my pc
Many thanks

Victory !!
The link http://blogs.gotdotnet.com/astebner/archive/2005/10/30/487096.aspx has a valid path to the smartmsizap program and an updated msizap.exe.
This worked a treat!

An update
Followed the instructions at http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/09/13/465401.aspx
Got a listing using msiinv.exe and then used msizap TA! xxx
This seemed to be working, i.e. a list of directories and registry keys was given.
However, still get the same splash screen from the vs2005 install, plus after a reboot
a fresh msiinv.exe listing shows exactly the same entries as before.
So no joy....
