Final Year Project in Indigo..

Hi.

I am a final year computer systems student and I have in my mind to do a project using Indigo for my final year project. I am doing research in it but I have to meet a superviser soon and I don't know much about what kinda of software will be needed or what what will be the toll on the hardware.

I am looking for help in the basics of getting started in a Indigo project, what will I need to see if  the idea of even trying something like this is in any way plausible.

Thanks in advance..

    Hello,

The hardware requirements to run WCF ("Indigo") will be relatively modest and should be consistent with the hardware requirements for the .NET Framework Version 2 posted at http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms135569, though you will need some additional hard disk space to install the WinFX runtime and WinFX SDK of course.

The operating system requirements for WCF are Windows Server 2003 SP1, Windows XP SP2, or a preview version of Windows Vista (note that you have to pick the right version of Windows Vista to match the version of WinFX you are using if you choose to go this route).

In terms of the additional software you will need, there are two things to consider - runtime requirements and development requirements.  To run a WCF appliction, all you will need is the WinFX runtime that ships in a self contained installation package that includes everything you need to run a WCF application.  On the development side, in addition to the WinFX runtime you will most likely need the WinFX SDK (which is currently available as a separate download), and we would recommend an IDE like Visual Studio 2005, or the Visual Studio 2005 Express Edition.  There is also a WinFX extensions package for Visual Studio that will make life easier by providing project templates for WCF and include the schema that provides context sensitive info when you edit configuration sections.

Thanks very much to both of you.

At least I know now that I will have no hardware and software problems if I find a project. Doing something in "Indigo" would interest me alot but at the same time as it is a new technology as such it may lack in the intensive research that would be helpful to me.

The idea was to re-develop an existing application in "Indigo", one that I have not yet decided on. Would people recommend this project as a good undertaking or would I be best to slide by and concentrate on something else

    Hi,

I would encourage you to go ahead with doing your project using Indigo.  In fact if you re-architected and built an existing app to Indigo - that would make an interesting case study. You could also learn the concepts of service orientation and then design the application.

You can then come with the benefits offered by Indigo on various attributes and give comparitive study of its advantages.

    Hi,

I feel its too early in the technology, don’t intent to discourage you, but for your project you could make use of all the technologies that come under Indigo ASMX, WS-*, Remoting, MSMQ ....

You could combine these technologies and develop your project and I am sure you will have a better understanding on existence of WCF (Codenamed "Indigo").
