VSS 2005 and Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition

Is Visual Source Safe 2005 included in Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition

I haven't been able to find information on this anywhere.  We are worried that we may have to purchase Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition and also purchase Visual Source Safe 2005.  Previously, we only had to purchase Visual Studio .NET 2003 Enterprise Architect which included Visual Source Safe 6.

Any information will help.

Thanks.

Thanks.  That page is what made me look into this further.

So it looks like we either have to purchase MSDN Premium or Visual Sourse Safe 2005 to get Source Safe with Visual Studio 2005 Professional.  I'm surprised that no one else has complained about this.

I wonder if everyone is assuming that Source Safe is part of Visual Studio 2005 Professional like it was with Visual Studio .NET Enterprise Architect (2003).

I think more people should be questioning this move by Microsoft.

    Hi,

VSS2005 does not require Server+CAL license types.
VSS is distributed-client application, so you need a VSS license for each client machine that has VSS installed.

The suggested prices for the VSS2005 are on this page:

I agree that having the VSS2005 as part of your VS2005 suite would be ideal.

I however can not seem to find any cost figures for vss2005.  I have noticed that as a MSDN subscriber I can download it now.  This does not however tell me what costs are involved to allow my fellow developers access.

I would assume that one must purchase the program itself.  Nowhere can I find licensing requirements.  Do I need to purchase a CAL for each developer or is a CAL included as part of the development suite

Anyone have any ideas   My search of various Microsoft sites either show VSS2005 beta or nothing.

    Hi Steve,

Visual Studio Professional has existed for many releases, and historically it has not included SourceSafe. We haven't really changed the packaging of these two products.

Now, I see your point about the fact that now there is no VS version boundled with SourceSafe (like was the case of VS EA on 2003). I will forward your feedback to our product managemenr team.

Sorry, according with http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/products/subscriptions/chart/ it seems that VSS2005 can only be downloaded if you have a Premium MSDN subscription.

    Hi Alfredo,

So is it possible to boundle these two products in future

    Thanks.

Yes, if you only have VS Professional. VSTeamEditions include VSS.
Btw, some retailers have lower prices than 280/550.

Looking at this link it looks like we will need to spend $280 or $550 PER DEVELOPER depending on whether it's an upgrade or new license.  Is that correct

So far I was using beta versions and they always included VSS 2005 beta in that. I just bought 2005 professiona with MSDN prof subscription. I dont have vss. I am very disappointed and angry.

I thought it would be included.

But anyway, can I,MSDN professional subscriber,  download vss2005 free of cost

    Hi Terry,

Yes I heard back from Product Management, and the way its described on the link posted above is the plan for releasing VS 2005 & SourceSafe 2005. There are currently no plans for boundling.

I agree with you Steve.  We are just now starting to look into VS 2005 and I'm not happy about the VSS2005 not being included as it has been in the past.  Seems like a ploy to get us to purchase another product or spend a lot of money for a subscription level we don't really need.

    Thanks for the support Terry.

I believe that there should be more people questioning/complaining that VSS 2005 is not included in Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition.  I think the reason that more people have not questioned this is that they don't realize that it isn't included.  Most people probably assume that it is included, like it was with 2003 Enterprise Architect.

I wonder if Alfredo has heard back from the product management team or has any more information.
