Visual Studio 2005 Documentation Missing...??

I have installed Visual Studio 2005 standard edition. Every thing works ok
except for the documentation item. When I choose the documentation item from
the start menu I get a page that has links for "How to install help for
Visual Studio" and "Visual Studio 2005 Combined Help Collection". When I
click the first link it says to put the install CD in and choose to install
product documentation but there is no such option on the install CD. When I
click the second link there is a line at the bottom of the page like
this...."Collections available for inclusion in VSCC:" but there is nothing
there and the update VSCC button is disabled. I need to have offline help
available......what do I need to do

Well, as it turns out, there was nothing wrong with my documentation screen. What I was expecting to see does not exist. I was simply confused and thanks to Maria Shneerson all is well now. I copied one of her examples and docked the 'content' to the left side of the screen and the 'index' on the bottom. Now the screen looks a bit more sensible. Kudos to Maria for her excellent guidance on this issue.

I'm forwarding this thread to the MSDN team to take a look.

    Stay tuned for a reply.

I have already tried this and it made no difference. My email is qxgator@msn.com. Do you  think it might be a problem with the registry entries or something like that. I had two different versions of C# Express before I upgraded to VS 2005 Standard. However, I uninstalled previous versions in complete compliance with the instructions on MSDN.

    Hi Maria Shneerson,

Where are you I still have the problem and

I have not heard from you yet

    Please Help

  • Curious Tom

Could you please go to Add/Remove programs and repair "MSDN Library for Visual Studio 2005" If it does not help, please let me know your e-mail and I will work with you offline to resolve this issue

    Thank you

I wish that it was that simple but unfortunately it is not. I did a full install of the MSDN part the first time and then after a complete un-install of everything I repeated the process with the same results. I am trying to understand why a Document Explorer repair would fix the problem. I am convinced it is a MS bug that, for whatever reason, cropped up on my machine. I would like to contact their support but why should I pay $90 for something that is not my fault

Thanks for the reply but this did not work. I guess I will try un-installing everything and then start from scratch again, unless someone has a better idea.

If you purchased VS Standard off the shelf, you get two free support calls.

The document explorer is also the engine that displays MSDN.  Can you try repairing that   If it doesn't work, let me know so I can loop in the MSDN team.

    Thanks.

Did you go through the MSDN installation

From your post, it still doesn't seem like you went through the install.  If you did, try repairing the Document Explorer from Add/Remove Programs.

    Maria,

I am dealing with a similar situation on a co workers machine.

I have successfully ran the "Visual Studio 2005 Combined Help Collection Manager" and was able to load missing help content from 3rd party vendor tools. However I am unable to get a list of filter by items to show up in the list. Here is what is missing:

    (no filter)
    (unfiltered)
    .Net Framework
    Visual Basic
    Visual C#
    Visual C++
    Visual J+
    Web Development (.Net)
    Windows Form Development

We have uninstalled Visual Studio 2005 and reloaded it.
We have installed the MSDN files.
We have run the "Visual Studio 2005 Combined Help Collection Manager".

Can you help me get these items to show in MS Document Explorer

    Thanks
    Rob

Thanks again for your suggestions but I just did the Document Explorer repair and there was no change.....it's still missing. Yes, I purchased the standard edition from Amazon but when I checked out the support site I must have mis-understood the support for the standard edition. There were so many options/suggestions it seemed like a snarled up convoluted mess and the 90 dollar support seemed like what I would need to do. It sure would be nice to get this fixed........

Folks are on holidays so it might be a few more days before getting an answer.  This issue is assigned to the MSDN team so someone will help you when everyone is back from the Christmas/New Years break.

VS Standard doesn't automatically install the MSDN Documentation for you.  Pop in the MSDN CDs and install it.  It should be in the same box as VS Standard.
