permcalc.exe fails the installation each and every single time.

ok, I have been banging my head against the wall here on Beta 2 installation

Opening day beta 2 tried downloading from msdn subscription. Downloaded SQL server 2005 and VS.

While downloading I built up a brand spanking new XP VPC SP2 all patches up to date. Well for some reason the first download of VS didn't take it was only 900 meg but I got SQL server. So I went ahead and installed SQL server. Started redownloading VS standard. I got the VS iso image downloaded finally when to capture image and VPC says it is not a valid image. However DVD burning software said it was fine and would burn it so I tried to install from dvd. about 80% of the way through I get the error installing can not read file (somepath on dvd) \permcalc.exe There is no skip file option so the whole thing has to roll back installation. So I download again same errors as before VPC says not a valid image I burn to dvd again with no problem and it bombs out on permcalc.exe. So I go look and permcalc.exe is there on both dvd's same size. I can launch the exe, it don't work it says it needs something else installed but it launches to at least give me an error like it is executing. Frustrated I give up.

VS 2005 pro comes out so I download that, 2 times. All with same errors as above both times. The iso image can not be recognized by VPC burn to dvd and each one bombs out on the permcalc.exe. Really erked and frustrated now I wait for my shipment which I was hoping would have the DVD's. Well I got team system but nothing else. So I go to install VS team system bombs on out permcalc.exe

Ok so I am guessing this has something to do with SQL server 2005 being installed first, which has been running fine btw. I would like to play with beta 2 but I really do not want to go through rebuilding another VPC. Next time I am just going to make copies of the hard drive, should have done that anyway I know but anyway anyone got any ideas on how I can get around this. Oh yeah and I have tried all the VS trouble shooting things, Install as admin, delete temp files, etc. All VS installations are bombing out exact same place on exact same file from several different versions and several different dvds.

I finally got it to install. However different DVD's. Our monthly .net user group MS had sent us a bunch of VS beta 2 cd's. I got that Tuesday night but I really didn't have much faith in the install since I had tried the install from DVD that came with MSDN subscription. Much to my suprise and pleasure tihs one installed all the way through.

However I will not be trying the June CTP

Tried that, now I get can't find file. This is during install I get the problem. The path it tried to install it from is correct or at least the one it tries to copy from that's the path I used on the DVD to go see if I could find the file and see if it was there or was like a 0 byte files or something. the path displayed takes me right to the file. The error I get (going from memory) is error can not copy permcalc.exe it is either write protected or corrupt. Which yeah it is on a DVD it is write protected.

I started building up another XP image last night maybe tonight or over the weekend I will get it all done we will see if it is SQL server 2005 being installed first or not is the problem then.

I went to go in and uninstall SQL server 2005 and sheesh what a cluster that process is. There is like 7 things to uninstall and they all have to be uninstalled in the correct order. Try to uninstall one it says it has a dependency on another and should be uninstalled first, go to uninstall the dependency it says it has another dependency or 2. The worst part is you do not know this until about 5 minutes into the uninstall after all the screens load and everything. After trying to uninstall SQL server2005 last night for an hour I decided to just build up another image. Mainly because how the heck do I know I will even get it all. All in all I was really excited about the release of 2.0 beta but when you have so many problem getting it to install and uninstall you kind of get disheartened. So if I get another new image all built up this weekend and get it installed great, but if not anymore I am not to concerned. I would compare my experiences with 2.0 so far like a kid sitting there waiting for Christmas and when it finally arrives you get underwear.

    Hi!
I had the same problem with PermCalc and VS2005 Beta2.
Seems to be related to the way DVD/ISO images are handled by VPC.
I tried several ways : reading the DVD directly, mounting the ISO image within VPC, mounting the ISO image using Daemon Tools... No way.

Here is one workaround for those interested:
    1. Extract the whole ISO image in a folder of the host OS.
    2. Start VPC and point to that folder using the Shared Folders VPC functionality (e.g.: map the folder to the Z letter).
    3. Open the Z drive and install from there.

Takes a long time, but worked for me :-)

Ditto your problem. I downloaded Pro and Std beta 2 (6/8/05) with the same PermCalc copy error. Microsoft Download help and tech support could not help.

The path is wrong, PermCalc.exe is in the Bin folder. Copy the whole DVD into a Folder and move the PermCalc.exe.
