I'm installing Visual Studio 2005 Team Suite from the Beta 2 DVD handed out at one of the recent MEDC events.
I have: Windows XP Pro + SP2, 1.6Ghz, 256MB RAM, 4Gb disk space free. No problem with the DVD drive that I am aware of. No previous betas installed. I have VS 2003, eVC++4.0, Embedded Visual Tools 3.0 installed.
Following error appears:
AppName: setup.exe AppVer: 8.0.50215.44 ModName: setup.exe
ModVer: 8.0.50215.44 Offset: 00029002
Any ideas I can send the full error log if you give me an address.

Ade W

Visual Studio 2005 Beta 2 setup fails immediately

It might be fusion, the windows installer, or something else installed on your machine which is causing this.
Can you try the workaround here:
http://forums.microsoft.com/msdn/ShowPost.aspx PostID=58372
and let me know if it works
It'll require you to get a copy of gacutil.exe and the binary in question from another machine with the same build.

Thanks.

Can you look at your %temp% folder and look at the error and paste it in a reply
Thanks.
ShriShri
I have read/write permission to %temp%.
When I run the setup now (\vs\setup.exe) the 65 files are copied but it does not get as far as creating a vsMSI* log file. Msinterr.txt and dd_vsinstall80.txt are created but don't seem to contain anything that looks useful in the way of error reports.
However, here's an extract from an earlier Vsmsilog* which contains the lines above 'Return value 3' (which I have seen you requesting from other folks who are having trouble.
Any further tips appreciated.

There isn't much in the log file right now to help diagnose this.
Do you also have a screen shot of the failure

The first time I let the DVD autorun it copied 65 files to \Temp\ and then gave the error. If I insert the DVD and let it autorun now, it immediately bombs out as originally reported. If I Explore the DVD and run \vs\setup\setup.exe then it copies the 65 files to \Temp\ and then gives the error.

Thanks for the tip. I installed a new 80Gb hard disk and copied the entire DVD to the local drive (seemed to go okay). However, no change on the problem. Can you confirm which file I should manually execute to start the installation I tried:
\vs\autorun.exe
\vs\setup.exe
\vs\Setup\setup.exe
but they all generate errors immediately.

You could try running FileMon or RegMon and see if they throw up any errors of obvious faults:
http://www.sysinternals.com
Is anything reported in Event Viewer Are there any .NET related packages installed on the machine Have you since put on XP SP2 Have you tried running Microsoft Update
Vantskruv
\vs\setup\setup.exe is the VS install only
Can you also check the permissions in your %temp% directory to make sure you have read/write access to it
