When to get data from the database

When should I get the data for both ComboBox drop-downs and the actual data to be edited.

Right now I'm doing it in the Form constructor.

The WFT suggested the Form Load event...but the bindings happen after the Load event so the controls were not updated properly.

When to get data from the database

    Almost all of the controls are bound to data in a strongly-typed dataset.

    I have two private methods.  The first gets all of the data for the drop-down list of the conbo boxes.  The second gets the actual data to be edited.

    The tables in the dataset are all filled by calling stored procedures at the sql server.

    If the two methods are called in the constructor, everthing looks fine.

    If I move these two methods to Form_Load, specically the combo boxes don't show the correct selected items matching the bound SelectedValue from the drop-down.

    Hmmm... I've always done this from the form's Load event without any problems. In my mind, stuff in the form's constructor should be about the form and its behavior, not the behavior of the data displayed on the form, so I tend not to ever put data handling stuff in there. 

    Can you explain more about what you're doing  In general, this ought to work from the Load event.

    The most likely thing I can think of that would cause the binding not to work would be if you were creating a new DataSet right before you filled it: the binding would still be to the old DataSet, so you wouldn't see your new data.

    The only thing I notice that is different is I don't clear the tables in the dataset before filling them with data.  In my case they wouldn't have and data to start with.

    But I'll give it another go around and see what happens.  I'll post some of the code if it doesn't work.  (Too large to post all of it.)

    Not clearing the dataset shouldn't matter -- I only did that because I was allowing the user to select one country, then another, and not clearing the dataset would show all the selected countries in the grid.

    I don't have your form here, but here's one I created (again, showing off my excellent user interface design skills (that's sarcastic)) that fills a combobox with a list of countries from the Customers table in Northwind, and fills a grid with all the customers. Select a country from the combo box, and see only customers from that country in the grid. I used a stored procedure named GetCountry to retrieve the countries (SELECT DISTINCT Country FROM Customers ORDER BY Country) and the default names for all the stored procedures to retrieve, updated, etc. all the items from Customers. You'll need to fix up the names in this sample (My project name was WindowsApplication44--perhaps it's time to clean up my computer --and it's buried in the code here by the designer. But this code works fine--I load the data from the Load event, and everything is happy. My code uses a parameter to filter the data for the grid, named @Country. See the code below for the details. -- Ken
