Well im still rather new to this but im definitely all about free stuff. I think prizes are awesome. Someone should get something for getting these same two bugs off my screen. Not much of ecosystem when theres only to animals in it eh
Well, I just started my Terrarium on about the 10th, and at first I had a pretty even split between Herb_bs and Noxs, at least considering only Herbivores. But now I've got only Noxs left. Any Herb_bs that do arrive sure don't last very long. I think it's the Asgards that helped tip the balance. Herb_bs need a Carn_b to keep them company!
Does anybody have a strategy for how to overcome the nox and asgard onslaught Should we make cooperating carn & herb as this seems to be a winning formula. I think with the overwhelming numbers the nox has and it's overtly agressive behaviour the only option we have is to keep running away long enough to survive. Answers on a postcard please.
Because the nox and asgard have a very well established base, the only way we are able to get rid of them is:
- some coordinated attack by several animals - luck
Con: removing will mean defeat and the nox' and asgards will have won. A well deserved victory. But the idea of cooperating animals will remain. It is only a matter of time before somebody else has a go at the same idea. Maybe not so well executed but still.
Pro: Removing them will give new budding critter creators a fighting chance. From my own experience I can say that it is pretty frustrating to see your infants slaughtered as soon as they enter the arena.
I would be in favor of removing them and make sure there is a hall of fame that will ensure everlasting glory. Maybe we should put a date on the removal. And a nice bag of goodies for the individual or individuals that achieve a small palace revolution before that date.
Well I am not sure about this, what I would really like to see is an advanced terrarium and a beginner terrarium. but you know that is only a wish and I know it would take an act of some higher ups to aprove the resources for this.
But this is my idea, when you reach like say 500 generations or some number, I am sure you have some better statistic to develop a more realistic number. Your critter then moves to the advanced server. Once you have a critter on the advanced server you can't upload another to the beginner.
Now I just learned about the terrarium about 2 weeks ago and I have a critter that kicks asgard in my test environement. It pack hunts but I have no plants. However I am still working on the logic behind pathing and so on. You throw in a bunch of herb b and plants and my critters get all confused. It takes a much different type of thinking than what I do normally on a daily basis. I do a lot of Biztalk 2004, Database Access, asp, web services and windows services. And for me this is a refreshing change and Asgard and nox provide a great challenge. Or a goal. So I do not want to see them go. Besides, if someone comes up with something that kicks Asgard and nox out. Well that will reinspire the creator to try again. Oh and on a side note maybe on the advanced server give a little bigger timeslice like maybe a 10 millisecond slice.
However, this Terrarium is probably the greatest tool I personally have ever seen to show off .net and get people to program with it in a fun way. It really helps people want to learn the basics, but if you really want your creature to succede you really have to get pretty deep into .net. I am on the board of directors for a Ineta .net user group and we are planning on demonstrating the terrarium as a great learning resource. Unfortunately some of the people new to .net might find going up against asgard and nox a little too overwhelming. I remember my first creature I made and introduced to the environment lasted 10 minutes. I just laughed and decided I need to do better testing and some more coding. Seond one was another experiment and I think it lasted 3 hours. I do wish your docs on the organismbase.dll were a little better, but I know Documentation is a boring job and beside the point. But for the VB 6 developer this is even better. I am a big C# fan. But also used to VB 6 and C++ and I know how many vb developers and classic asp developers out there never even heard the word inheritance. And the firs thing you have to do here is inherit from the organismbase class. I don;t know if this was built with the thought of being used as a learning tool in this way but I see it has great potential in doing that.
I have been using .net in production since the very first day of release of 1.0 and Have really started to grow into a lull, Like I said the terrarium gives me a challenge, on ADO.net or querying and interacting with Active Directory I will give a lot of people a run for their money. But this has really taught me a lot, you have me looking at the .net documentation in places I may have only glanced at, I am seriously doing controlled time tests on which is faster on repeated things. Looping through Array List, Or Looping through once and putting key information into a datatable and using Dataview to sort and search or using the find and search methods on the datatable. Yeah I know I am still in my ADO.net environment but you don't know till you try and do comparison. I have never had to be concerned with millisecond timeslices. Also the things I created I never had to worry about code level security either. Yeah I read about it but haven't ever came into a practical use for it yet. The Terrarium made me go back and look into it. So will my creature that I think can kill asgard get implemented Yeah but at the rate I am going on it maybe not till july. Everytime I hit something or think of something new while testing or coding I go look it up again and maybe run a few tests in a different way. You may laugh but the garbage collection has always intrigued me. So I have even found myself watching the terrarium run through performance monitor and watching the environment work and watching garbage collection.
So, I guess in conclusion I guess I would love to see a advanced level terrarium and a begining level terrarium. If not then a hall of fame with you still being able to download the creature dll to put into your own test envoronment.
I've been wanting to get into this for awhile, but am only now starting to code. I'd be interested in teaming up with someone to fight the nox/asgards, but I'd have to confess that it may be a little while before I can put together a decent critter.
I'm currently laying some foundational code, and looking into trying to determine how to write some unit tests (nunint/csunit) to to simulate situations. I'd be interested if anyone has managed to do this.
I am currently planning on writing an herbivore, but at this point, I really don't care yet, so if someone already has an herbi, I'd be fine w/ switching to carni.
I'd be interested in discussing high-level decision making strategies as well.
In fact, I don't think that Nox 3.6's are that great conquerors, but they are great defenders. If no enemies around, they wait hungrily next to a plant (sometimes taking a little bite). So when other herbs come along, they can attack them immediately!
But if you put 10 Nox's and 10 Herb_b's in an empty terrarium (with only plants), Herb_b will win for sure!
For fun, make up a little throw away animal and try introducing it... awwwww poor animal.
And it definetly seems to be cooperating with Asgard. I assume they've invaded your ecosystem as well
I just wish I knew what they were doing with their antennas. On Asgards the right cycles and the left changes for reasons that remain unclear. On Noxs the left cyles sometimes, and the left, might change, although I haven't seen it change yet.
Anyway, it seems like these guys could be a difficult pair to*space space*up. Some of the noxes on my system are on the 33000th generation! How long is that! several months Like 11 maybe Is there a way to find out when they were introduced
I'm new into both .NET and the Terrarium and would just like to say you guys have come up with an awsome concept for highlighting .NET. It's quickly become an addiction, one that I'm trying to get all my friends involved in. So to the developers who created the Terrarium, I thank you. Great work and Great fun, and I can even tell people I'm learning .Net as an excuse to play with bugs.
I'd also like to congratulate Mark Yang, the listed author of the Nox and Asgard. You've done an amazing job with those two, the way they are able to work in concert and not starve each other out in the process says a lot about skill and thought that went into them. Now with that said.. We're all gunnin for you!!
Yes, the thought of a Terrarium Hall of Fame has come up. I've contact Mark and asked if he would mind me retiring Nox and Asgard and he said no problem. So I'll leave it up to you guys. I can remove them, or leave them in for you to defeat.

Maybe there should be a little prize involved for the person who can topple Nox and Asgard

I think the creator of Nox & Asgard should be prized for making such a sucessful solution.

Well, maybe the introduction of Terrarium 1.2 is going to 'reset' the statistics.
