I'm having trouble getting Visual Web Developer Express 2005 installed because I'm having problems uninstalling Visual Web Developer Express and SQL Server Express (both Beta 2). I can't install the full new version until I get these off my computer.
I try uninstalling it by going to the Add/Remove programs in the CP, but always get a message when I try and remove SQL Express or VWD Express that says that "Setup Failed." I then click on the help button thats available and it says that the file 'setup.rll' is what is generating the message. Also the event type listed: 'sharedsetup\sharedsetupactions.cpp'
I'm figuring restoring VWD and SQL Express would do the job, but I don't have the EXE that I downloaded to install these programs.
Is there some way to by pass this Or am I stuck until I can get my hands on the EXE that would install/restore the programs, so I could delete them

The only way out is a full restart, all other components have uninstalled correctly.
I am getting close to hacking the registry and related files to try and load the new releases. Otherwise I am quite impressed with what I have seen in the Beta's and I am looking forward to trying the release versions

Scott, thing is that uninstall program doesn't do the job. For some reason, it just hangs after saying it has detected one thing and then it doesn't do anything.

The setup has encountered an unexpected error in datastore. The action is Write_CommitFlag. The error is: Unable to write propery into cache: flagCommit
Unable to write property into cache: "flagCommit"
XmlRW Error:Failur loading xmlrw.dll

This appears to be associated with left over SQL Server Tools which does not show-up on the add/remove programs list - I haven't found an unstall program yet. Hopefully, someone will have a good solution - I really don't want to edit the registry!

I had this problem and it was fixed by re-installing the beta and then running the tool again.

This info applies only to the error of "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools Express Edition CTP" not being removed by the cleanup tool on this particular PC.
1. Using add/remove programs, follow the instructions in
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/support/uninstall/
I went ahead and deleted dotNet2.0 also
2. Backup the registry (or at least the keys you edit/delete)
3. Don't skip step one
4. Delete the key -
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Installer\Products\983B05722D2A359499AC721C2F8A6EDF]
5. After that I ran the CD (from an extract on a hard drive) and installed all of the products.
=============================
There were a couple of other keys in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ section that probably could have been removed also, but I left them for now.
As always, you're on your own if you edit the registry!!

In the end the only way I could get the tool to work was to re-download and install the beta.
PS I wish now I hadn't bothered because my app that was virtually ready for release now won't even compile!
