You are not alone

I would like to install .net beta 2. However I had previously installed beta 1, and worse, vbexpress beta 1. Then I must have really messed up and uninstalled those products in the wrong order. So now I cannot install beta 2.  I found and ran the Beta 2 Cleanup Tool, and it successfully cleaned MSDN for me. I had already hand-cleaned the registry as best I could.  However, the tool errors out when trying to clean vbexpress - the error is:  Error 1316:  A network error occured while attempting to read from the file c:\windows\installer\vbsetup.msi     I am assuming thats means it cannot find the file. If I remember right, I installed this 'over the net', directly from MS's site.  Does anybody know how to get around this Could I be sent 'just that file', and have things work   Thanks in advance.

There have been many threads about this problem over the past several months. As a result of one of them I was in email contact with a member of the MS Software Development staff and he gave me several diagnostic & cleanup tools to run to try to correct this problem.  None of them worked and I am still unable to completely remove VB Express Beta 1 or install Beta 2.

Apparently the only way to get around this problem is to reinstall XP (which I am not about to do.) Or go buy a new PC.

Actually the latter option might be my solution since my current machine is getting a bit old & creaky anyway.

I too have the same circumstance.  I had several email exchanges wtih a MS person about this and provided him with a couple of different sets of diagnostic data. Apparently there is no way to clear this problem. I fear we are stuck until the official release comes out, and even then I'm concerned about it's installability.

Here is the last suggestion I got for de-installing Beta 1.  The suggestion failed for me; maybe you will be luckier.

    msiexec /x 7F500014-14F5-4962-989D-F42A8EE6384E

enter this into the Run Program text box and hope for the best.

which clean up tool are you using Did you try tools at
http://mscomapps/fwlink/edit.asp linkid=47065 (uninstall products if the reg keys are intact. It seems the tool could not find the file to perform the uninstall) and
    http://blogs.msdn.com/astebner/archive/2005/04/21/410573.aspx (clean up the framework)

After running both tools, could you try to reinstall/repair of Beta2 products

    Thanks
