Hi,
i tried installing a starter kit. and when i get to stage 2 of the installation i get errors on everything thats installing.
All the errors read:

Please can you help me, I need the starter kit so i can create my band website

I tried the Visual Web Developer Express and still no luck. Like the others, we are told to start by running the vsi file in "My.Blogs VS Snippet ad Add In" and we get the error:
"Installation stopped because the directory for the ProjectType value did not exist. The project type is invalid for your installation of Visual Studio."
The template directory mentioned in other threads does exist on my pc, so I'm not sure what directory it's looking for nor the VS project type it's looking for.
I would think that 5 months is enough time to fix a little issue like this, no

You will need to make sure that you have the Web Components installed if you are installing a Web Starter Kit, you will also need to make sure you have both C# and Visual Basic installed to install the associated Starter Kits.
You can do this by:

Sorry I should have asked what edition of Visual Studio are you running
If you have Visual Studio 8 installed (and not one of the Express editions) do you have the web components installed (Do you have the option to create a web site - File -> New -> Web Site... ).

Where are you installing the Starter kits from
What version of Visual Studio/Visual Express Editions are you running

Hello,
I think the confusion is that Visual Basic Express is only for client applications while Visual Web Developer Express is the tool for VB Web applications. Try downloading Visual Web Developer Express and see if this fixes your issue (you can run Visual Basic and Visual Web Developer Express side-by-side with no problems).
If that doesn't solve your issue, can you tell me what Starter Kit you're trying to run

Can you point me to the *exact* Starter Kit you are trying to download and the *exact* product(s) you are using to better diagnose what the issue could be
You should be aware that Visual Studio Express Editions do not have extensibility support, so if you're trying to install an add-in, that's the issue.

Hi,
I have Win XP SP 2, VS2005 with VWD, VB and C# installed [with SQL 2000].
I've tried using the Dotnetnuke starterKit and the the Infragistics Starterkists - they both report the:
"Installation stopped because the directory for the ProjectType value did not exist. The project type is invalid for your installation of Visual Studio." error.
I searched for replies to this issue and it all apparently boils down to missing directories. The problem appears to have been 'in play' for over a year.
I found this in the asp.net forums and it appears to be a reasonably definitive answer:
"
........ Here's what you do:
1) navigate to: C:\Documents and Settings\yourname\My Documents\Visual Studio 2005\Templates <-------- location depends on your installation, of course
2) here you'll find two folders: ItemTemplates and ProjectTemplates; in each of these folders create a new folder called Visual Basic
3) your new directory structure should look like:
Visual Studio 2005/
Templates/
ItemTemplates/
Visual Basic/
Visual Web Developer/
ProjectTemplates/
Visual Basic/
Visual Web Developer/
4) re-run the installer and it should work now
"
I tried this - it didn't work. There were other posts that ran a variation of this with sub-directories called "Web" under "Visual Basic". These didn't work either [for me], although it apparently did for others!!!! weird.
Another forums entry suggested this....
"I had this problem and I think it was because I had just moved my 'My Documents' folder to the server (So the project directory was on a network drive).
I changed the paths in VS2005 (under tools > options >project and solutions) so they pointed to the C:
Tried installing the starter pack again and it worked.
I then changed the paths back to the network drives and installed it again and it worked.
Don't really know why this worked but hope you can use it."
I too had moved my "MyDocuments" folder to the D drive on my system [C drive way too full...], so this may the issue. I tried the suggestions but still no joy....
Anyone got any further suggestions If anyone can post a list of the actual files [which I presume are in the zip files] I guess I could "hand craft" the file structure, paste all the files and hope for the best......
[Why on earth can't the error message include the actual path in the message!!! That'd make it useful....]
Until this is resolved, I and many others appear not to be able to use Start Kits from any source.
regards,
Duncan.
