installing express editions on same computer as full editions
This refers to the final products. Can we have visual web developer express and sqlserver express alongside vs stuidio 2005 and sqlserver 2005 developer edition
I've used Virtual PC 2004 to create alternate setups which reside on the same computer as an entire emulated PC environment. It has proved helpful in having a Windows Server 2000 system with SQL Server 2000 as an example environment that I can use for testing purposes from my laptop without worrying about "corrupting" my usual development environment with overlaying versions of software. It works well for having alternate testing environments, use of development environments that have conflicting requirements, etc. It seems to work really well with 1GB of RAM in the laptop for all environments I've needed to test within although some may want to increase available RAM to 2GB to improve performance in the virtual system. In my case the virtual system tends to be configured with 384MB for W2K server and 512MB for W2003 Server or development environments with Windows XP.
Yes, you can install all of those products on the same machine together. The Express versions and the full versions stay fairly seperate from one another, but will share the same project directory, etc. so that you can work with the same projects easily from both the full, and Express versions.
I had C# Express installed. When installing VS 2005, on load the installer notified me that the Express version had to be uninstalled before continuing.
Yes, Visual C++ 2005 Express can be installed alongside your present environment. Visual Studio 2005 is designed to work side by side with Visual Studio .NET and Visual Studio .NET 2003.
The thread topic seems appropriate for my question, so I hope you don't mind my jumping in.
As a hobby, I develop plug-in modules for an audio processing program, which I distribute to the program's user community as freeware/donationware. I currently use Visual C++.net 2002 Standard Edition for development, and do my final release compile using the Visual C++ Toolkit 2003 optimizing compiler. Because of real time DSP processing requirements, the code I write is native, with inline assembler in some critical loops. I am currently supporting over 100 modules, with a user base of several thousand, so I don't want to break my development system.
Could Visual C++ 2005 Express be installed alongside my present environment without causing problems
I dont think the express editions will help you learn any faster. Sites like www.asp.net have some good tutorials that might help. And of course if you have questions on how to do something you can always ask a question on the forum.
I'm waiting for a good book on asp.net 2.0, including lots of examples. It can't be too theorectical, and it has to have been written based at least on beta2.

Just a thought.

Have you had betas or CTPs on this machine
Most likely there was a version mismatch and the setup logic detected the older version. We do test with C# install followed by VS Pro install.

I decided not to install express versions, because as stated, they won't make learning easier.
I've had mixed experiences with virtual pc. In my case, with 2gb ram, it seemed to slow the computer down.
