When should companies NOT use Express editions?

Most of the web development where I work is Oracle-based. I love the price and features of the VWD product, but I have concerns that I'll get in the middle of a big project or real-time support activity and find out that I really needed VS2005 Standard or Professional all along.

Are there situations where you should avoid Express editions and go directly to the Standard or Professional versions

When should companies NOT use Express editions?

  • Dennis Habib MSFT

The Express Editions are not intended for use by companies - according to the F.A.Q.

"Visual Web Developer Express is intended for non-professional, hobbyist, and beginning Web developers who want to evaluate or learn how to build ASP.NET 2.0 Web applications."

So for your personal evaluation or for learning, Express is fine, but for professional development and production applications you will need Standard or Pro.

You can use oracle databases through visual web developer. If you use the VS2005 Express edition features you might want to have a look at the ASP.NET forums for Visual Web Developer.

Can Visual Studio Web Developer Express 2005 update an Oracle database We are able to select from Oracle tables but cannot generate update statements using Advanced SQL Generation Options under Configure Data Source. Is this a limitation or is there something we didn't setup properly.
