I have spent the last hour trying to find other cases of the same install error on the web, but w/o luck. Does anyone know how to fix the following.
I have Windows XP SP2 with VS 2005 Beta 2 (April 2005).
When trying to install the "SQL Server 2005 Express Edition April CTP" I'm getting an error at the end of the install. Here's some of the messages:
The initial error dialog:
"Microsoft SQL Server 2005 CTP Setup" (window title)
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 CTP Setup was unable to install on your computer.
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 CTP Setup has encountered a problem and will end.
After clicking on the "What does this error report contain " hyperlink I get the following dialog:
Error signature:
EventType: sql90setup
P1: componentupdateaction
P2: 0x80070643
P3: sqls__componentupdateaction__perform
P4: 0x643
P5: setup_sqlsetupactions.cpp@1423
P6: setup.exe@200.90.1116.0
P7: none
From "View Error Log" in the VS 2005 Beta 2 Setup window:
[09/26/05,22:36:14] Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition April CTP: [2] Error code 1603 for this component means "Fatal error during installation.
"
[09/26/05,22:36:14] Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition April CTP: [2] Setup Failed on component Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition April CTP
From inside the SqlSetup0004.cab, SQLSetup*_Core.log:
Error: Action "ComponentUpdateAction" threw an exception during execution. Error information reported during run:

}} {t:\yukon\sql\setup\sqlcu\dll\scusetupmgr.cpp:409}
I also have WinFX installed, but I don't think it's related because I experienced this error once earlier, before WinFX was installed (decided to ignore it then).
I hope to avoid having to wipe out all the VS 2005 stuff and start over again, but if I have to, which is the right combination of components, given that I need to work with VS 2005 and WinFx (I do have the "Goods" DVDs from PDC).
Many thanks,

You could try to run the clean up on this site:
http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/express/readme/
It is a Visual Studio 2005 clean up, but it will probably find your SNAC and clean it up.

I haven't found an answer yet, but I also haven't spent much time on the issue. I have been working on other things for the last while.
I expect to get back to this issue this week. It would be nice if someone at MS could give us some insight into the case (e.g. SNAC).
I'll post here if/when I have any more information.

In what order did you uninstall
If you have installed SQL Server 2005 and after that Visual Studio you should uninstall the other way around.
This might sound odd but if you try to install the older SQL CTP again and after that uses the cleanup tool from the April CTP. I had some pretty tough problems with that release too :-) I also had some problems with the last release :-)
