when trying to start the SQL Server Management Studio Express CTP, i can click continue and it works, but the error is annoying.

Just wanted to confirm Michael's thoughts,
I just installed Management Studio Express WITH VISUAL STUDIO OPEN and encountered this problem. I encountered the "subkey" error on first opening management studio. After reading this post and another, I decided to reboot before trying anything else. Management studio is now behaving normally.
I believe that the error has something to do with Visual Studio being open during the installation or on first use of the application.

Somewhere i read that it is something to do with the runtime, so i uninstalled Management Studio, also uninstall net framework 2, reboot and install then first the framework and second the Management Studio.
After that, everything work as a charm!

I have the express versions of VB.Net 2005 and Web developer installed and was getting the same problem with SQL Server Management Studio Express. After reading many posts my solution was:
1) shutdown Visual studio & the SQL Server, and SQL Server Management Studio Express.
2) Using Add / Remove programs on the control panel, clicked on "Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express" and then pressed "Change" (not the remove button).
3) After hitting "Next" on the installer I chose "Repair" from the Program maintenance dialog and then pressed "Next".
4) After the installer finished up I rebooted
5) After the reboot, I logged back in and let my system finish loading everything back up. Next I opened SQL Server Management Studio Express and connected to my database. No errors!!!
I've also tested other sequences of opening Visual studio and then reopening Management studio and the problem seems to be fixed.

Will add that rebooting is required for the above fix to work. I tried numerous repairs without sucess until I rebooted. What I did was re-boot and then do the Repair operation. And things worked fine.
Some additional information about doing the repair:
I installed Sql Server Express with the advanced options (SQLEXPR_ADV.exe). When I did the repair it asked for location of "SQLServer2005_ssmsee.msi" and this file cannot be found. The file is extracted to temporary directory during the install of Sql Server Express with the advanced options and was deleted after the install completed. In order to do the repair, I had to first find and download "SQLServer2005_ssmee.msi". You can get the file from http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/express/bb410792.aspx. It's the download under SQL Server Managment Studio Express.
