help with confusing unknown error

i used to run the visual studio 2005 beta 2. then i had some computer problems, but i didnt want to lose my data on my harddrive so i simply just installed windows over the old thing. iv done this before, and i know its now the best method, but for the first time, visual studio 2005 would not run once it was reinstalled. i would get an window simply saying "unknown error".

now i uninstalled visual studio 2005, and tried to get visual c++ 2005 express installed, but that too crashes on the same "unknown error". any pointers to whats wrong i know the .net platform is properly installed as i can use sharpdevelope with the .net 2 libraries.
