Std Visual Studio 2005 vs. VS 2005 Express

Quick question or two,

I have used v2002 90-day trial in past, currently have 2003... and I'm looking at installing 2005 ASAP. In the past, I installed beta 2 of the Express ver, and I have confirmed it is gone, so that old problem is solved... I have one program created in Express (the Sudoku example code) that I want to compare to my own pseudocode I wrote up and try running it as well in a different language...etc...normal coding. Here's the question(s)....

1) Does the Standard version of MS Visual Studio .net 2005 contain all that is needed to run programs already created in the Express version.... ( y / n ) In other words, is MS Visual Studio .Net 2005 Professional "COMPLETELY" separate from the regular version, or can Express solution programs run on the 2005 version (don't worry about the backwards compatability... I understand that since the 2002 version and how to deal with that)

2) If an Express solution/coded program doesn't work on the full version, and I would need to download/install the Express version, which one should I install first, the full Studio, or the Express The Express instructions says to remove everything that is .net 2.0 (Is that just the old beta 2 versions or everything including the one that comes through Microsoft Updates--like comparing a Java SDK to a Java RE, I know...)...cause I don't want to download on dialup if I don't have to nor remove anything I don't have to. Basically, what's the best solution to install Express if need-be.

This game Sudoku is so addictive...once you pick up a newspaper, you can't put it down until you solve it... Finally, I just bought a book to play when not near a newspaper.... can't wait for another new day for a new puzzle. I got the idea to try creating one...hey, I learned all this stuff about recursion and backtracking... fun once you get used to it. Might as well test it out and compare.

Thanks so much,

Jordan

With the visual studio packages each edition has all of the functions and systems that are in the previous edition. Buy this I mean that the pro version has all of the features and can load all of the express systems. So yes if you have a program in express it will and does load in the VS pro system.

As for installing the different editions on the same system, the only catch you have is that if you are using 2003 and 2005 on the same machine I would make sure that you have the previous version installed first so that the file ext are assigned to the correct programs. And you do not have to remove any version of the .net framework if it was downloaded and installed after the Nov 2005 date. The read me should specify that you need to only remove Beta or CTP Versions.

You know, installing is usually easy, but with this program, it just isn't as simple as it is made out to be. Of course, I get it set up and in the process of installing the prereqs...(installer 3.1 was already installed)...It installs the framework 2.0, the new parser, Document Explorer, Visual Studio 2005, .net 1 SP3, the compact framework, The j# redist. SQL Server 2 Mobile, the emulator, and SQL Server 2005 Express... meanwhile, somewhere in the middle it stops and is looking for a few (2 or 3) different EXE files back to back... I don't know why they weren't included, but at the end it gave me a readout of errors encountered, yet still said the installation was successful. Here's the file output:

[05/31/06,20:20:18] Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Professional Edition - ENU: [2] ERROR:Error 1308.Source file not found: e:\wcu\JSharpRedistCore\vjredist.exe. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.

I had problem viewing the design viewer in VB.net portion, so I tried reinstalling, and while installing the "Microsoft Visual Studio 2005" I got a "2349" error... and it rolled back I guess...because installation didn't continue, and it gave me an error message of unsuccessful installation and pointed me to MSDN homepage to find answers I can't find. First of all, I had some of the older 1.1 versions of J# (which I thought was being phased out...I don't have MSJava files anymore...only regular java, a few different SDK's in the 1.4.2_xx and the newest 1.5.0.06 ...not having MS Java....could that be a problem There was a legal issue going on, and I no longer have it nor can get it back unless if I completely new install WinXP from the beginning.

The sql express and .net Compact Framework 2.0 also has a problem supposably, and so I think the program just bypassed it once I selected something like Ignore or Continue (so that it would install and not give up) because Retry was not working)...

I'm kind of stuck here without a VB form editor...BUT, might I add, the Compiler DOES work, so I can preview the nice work you people put into the Sudoku, however, still can't work on my own in the new version. The 2003 version still works, but with a new version available, it just isn't my wishes right now.

One additional thing to add... I can't post pictures, but I do get a Messagebox with an error on load or clicking on some specific menu objects:

    "Package Load Failure

Package "Visual Studio Explorers and Designers Package" has failed to load properly ( GUID = BD8529D3-625D-4496-8354-3DAD630ECC1B} ). Please contact package vendor for assistance. Application restart is recommended, due to possible environment corruption. Would you like to disable loading this package in the future You may use 'devenv /resetskippkgs' to re-enable package loading."

    btns y | | n

Just wanted to share that as well. Click no, it pops-

back up 5 more times with the same box except with an error about the "Visual Studio Common IDE Package" also failed (GUID = 6E87CFAD-6C05-4ADF-9CD7-3B7943875B7C} (sorry if any mistyping... if it appears close to this, that's the hash key...) ...Then I'm free until I click the toolbar on the left side and get another message...it also displays in output box on bottom of editor as

"The Visual Studio Class Designer Package ({DD1683A7-5A4C-4234-81B3-A4CC91DBEAC9}) did not load because of previous errors. For assistance, contact the package vendor. To attempt to load this package again, type 'devenv /resetskippkgs' at the command prompt."

LAST But not least... actually MOST important, should I double click on a VB file that is a form (GUI coding Properties defined as objects with Events, etc...)

A warning Dialog Box pops up with message

    :"Could not load type 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Interop.IVsRunningDocumentTable2' from assembly 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.Shell.Inderop.8.0, Version=8.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublickeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a.'

... and this is just a basic form I created new with its original given name... no editing whatsoever to the code.

I hope this helps if this should be a bigger problem. If it is just me, any suggestions besides trying reinstall (to fix) Would complete uninstall work Then Try install again Or is there something just wrong with my system I've had a lot of work on it...planning to buy a new harddrive...is that a better solution Please give me your best guess...Experts/programmers preferred. If you'd like the entire install process text file (some hash code will be edited/sensored for privacy), if that'd help, please let me know. Thanks!

    Hi,

Not to rush you or anything, maybe I'll post this in a better section related to these more complex problems. I tried uninstalling... in a bit I will reinstall and see if that changes anything. The program is registered through my school as an *.iso file on download, and I burnt 2 cd's and they were successful. Maybe something was missing in the packaging, so I'll check with them as I document the problem in more detail the next time I reinstall.

If you heard of this problem though or can relate in any way, I'd appreciate any reply. Your first answer was excellent. I just in terms of the comparison. I was able to compile and create an exe file for pre-coded projects, but I just can't use some tools should I want to create my own versions...could be problem with the register keys. Maybe whatever I skipped due to it not being found was a problem. I have the 2 complete disks we are given. The only thing else I think is something is wrong with my machine, either 2 versions don't work well together or else I'm missing something on my computer which doesn't look like the problem. I'll give it another try and get back with the full detail, good or bad.

    Thanks,

    Jordan

Just what I thought and wanted to hear. Thanks!

That express is nice but doesn't include all that I usually use...but it is nice. I do have the newest version of .net 2.0, so I'm sure that'll work fine. Usually comes as a prereq before installing. I just looked at the one direction page for a second and it caught my eye. One thing though, I just wish they didn't separate the creation of the objects (usually automatically created objects in the form designer) from the method (event) and function definitions. It was nice how it was in 2003 "hidden" in a way. But guess they are trying to go more OOP style.

    Thanks again!
