Encountered error in doing VWD setup using Windows Installer 3.1 in Win XP SP2 machine.
(SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition has been sucessfully installed previously
and is currently installed on the machine and the service was running).

I have admin rights and am logged in as an admin user.
I have disabled Norton AV Auto protect. Webroot Spy Sweeoer is ACTIVE.
I have searched the forums and have found many others who have had similar issues, but for whom the advice (log on as user with admin rights) seemed not to work. One "support" response was to go to the ASP.NET forum (where there was no help either).
So here I am - stuck after sitting through a huge download. What shouild I do
BTW: I have never installed any of the betas on this machine. Since I do have SS 2005 Developer edition installed, that means I also have the (limited) VS 2005 installed for Reporting Services, etc.
I have checked authorizations for my account (administrator with full rights+read) and the SYSTEM account (FULL rights plus READ).
The only good experience I have had so far is the fact that I do not need to sit through the entire download each time I retry the installation (which I just did after disabling NAV and SpySweeper- same 1406 error, same place, trying to install VWD).
All systems are stop until I get past this issue. Someone please respond with something better than what I have found so far on these fora.

Error 1406 Installing Web Developer Express

Andreas:
I am not comfortable with messing around with the registry. However, I did the following:
1. Opened up Regedt32
2. did a find on "AC0714F7-3D04-11D1-AE7D-00A0C90F26F4"
3. Found HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{AC0714F6-3D04-11D1-AE7D-00A0C90F26F4}\Instance CLSID and the entry under that was "Microsoft Add-In Authouring Designer"
4. Modified it to read "Microsoft Add-In Authouring Designe"
5. Changed it back to "Microsoft Add-In Authouring Designer"
6. Found Next occurrence (key name="HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSAddnDr.AddInInstance") and I was able to modify its contents as well.
7. Found next occurrence (key name = "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\MSAddnDr.AddInInstance.1"). Also modifiable.
8. Next occurrence, "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\
{AC0714F6-3D04-11D1-AE7D-00A0C90F26F4}\Instance CLSID", was also modifiable.
9. Next occurrence, "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\CLSID\{AC0714F7-3D04-11D1-AE7D-00A0C90F26F4}", was also modifiable.
etc., etc.
Based upon that I assume that "You can try to manually add a entry under that key with regedit and see if it also fails" did not result in the failure you suggested might occur.
As for the fixes you referenced: (1) I have never installed any of the betas. (2) the other issues seemed to do with the above attempt to do manual writing to the key ("Modifiable" ). I have been able to write to those keys, so I cannot figure out how the references you provided apply to my case.
Now what (Final point - got the same error trying to install VC# Express)
YT
They applied that as it was also error 1406 and permissions to write to the registry.
I referenced those because they mention all possible solutions I know of.
Be sure to run as administrator
Check the permissions to registry
Be sure that there is no applications denying access like anti virus software.
Another idea mentioned was to use regmon and see what the actual error is.

- or reason as to why it did install on my laptop

My solution:
Make note of the key when the error appears.
Run regedit, go to the key, export it (for bu) & delete it.
Re-run the install.
Repeat each time the error appears (it will always be a different key).
In my case, I had to delete the following keys:
HKLM\Software\Classess\.xsd
HKLM\Software\Classess\.dtd
HKLM\Software\Classess\.xdr
HKLM\Software\Classess\.xslt
HKLM\Software\Classess\.wsdl
After doing so, VS Web Express installed properly & recreated the keys.
Hope this helps someone.

I had this same error and found that by closing the stupid IM window in the tool bar fixed the problem. I hope this works for you too.

I am very confused, it tries to create a key it just closed, that implies it just had it successfully opened.
Have you verified your computer if free from virus and malicious software
I am not sure I will be able to figure out what more could help you. You might want to consider reporting this to the product feedback center, you will be able to attach the logfile there.

You can mail the regmon log to me, I will be even more confused... :)

Did you ever find a way to resolve this issue I experience the same issue with the registry. I was hoping someone had found a workaround...
Thanks in advance!

dcd112778,
what did you do to install when getting this error Setting registry permission
As a MVP I do not possess any magic powers. :) If you have a clear idea what you needed to do to get it installed you might want to report it via http://connect.microsoft.com .
With your feedback you will help microsoft improve the express editions so if you have some please use the connect site.

Thanks for staying with me on this. I am still lost!
I have regmon but I hardly know what to do with it. As I mentioned, I am NOT a deep technical person and most of this is - at least currently - way over my head.
What do I do with a regmon once I do this. I attempted to filter on the GUID that keeps popping up as the basis for the 1406 error. I got a long listing of something in REGMON, but it is all gobbldygook to me. I would be happy to attach the log from regmon, but I don't see any attach link on this page. I can email it to you and perhaps you can make sense out of it.
The lines in all that garbage that jump out at me are below (especially the ones that talk about access denial):

What now
Madmaniakid
Thanks for the update.

Well, I am confused, as well. I am not sure how I can verify the absence of something (viruses, etc.) However, I can say that I have had NAV and Spysweeper (plus firewalls up) active on this machine since it was purchased. The only time I have ever let down the shields has been when downloading and installing tghe MS Visual Express products. Neither of these has ever complained about any malware.
Perhaps you are aware of some other means of validating the absence of malware that I could use.
As for the log, I shall send same to you via separate email and I shall attempt to get some support from the product feedback center. I* must say, this has been most disappointing. I had looked forward to MS providing something neat that I could try. Instead, I have spent many hours in the weeds grasping at straws to no avail.

I read bugs submitted to product feedback center.

You can try to manually add a entry under that key with regedit and see if it also fails.
Use regedt32, where you can right click and check the permissions.

Well, you won't believe this!
I had finally given up on ever getting an answer to the problem of installing these onto my XP Pro desktop.
I was, however, able to successfully install all of the express products on my XP Pro laptop - no problems, no issues there. Still could not install any of them on my desktop
Then, a few weeks after doing that successful install on the laptop, I logged into my desktop via remote desktop connection from the laptop and tried to run the Express installs on the desktop. Mirabile dictu! They installed with zero problems.
The only thing that had changed on the desktop was the normally occurring batches of intervening, automatic updates of:
(1) Windows Automatic Update
(2) Webroot Spysweeper
(3) Norton Antivirus
Go figure.
