I have tried installing SQL Server Express along with Visual Basic Express 2005. This installation of Visual Basic and MSDN went OK but when it came to SQL Server the installation hung. I removed the install and tried again - same problem. I then downloaded the SQL Server express CD image and tried to install from that. This time the install hung when the message "Checking IIS version" showed. I am using a SONY Vaio laptop running Windows XP Home SP2. I have no Beta software on the machine as I did not try this installation until I had rebuilt the harddisk from the recovery disks supplied with the computer.
I did not know that IIS was necessary for SQL Server and it is not supplied with my copy of XP Home (I looked for it as suggested in IIS installation instructions from knowledge base). Any Ideas as to whats wrong

Install of SQL Server Express hangs

All,
Problem was caused on my machine because I had Norton Firewall enabled. Disable Norton Firewall and use the SQLEXPR application and it should install.

Thanks Pierre,
Turning off Norton Internet Security 2005 solved the problem. I used the downloaded installation file and disconnected from the internet before turning off the firewall. This does pose a problem if you want to do the web install as you have no protection.

Bob,
I'm having the same issue. I'm installing on WinXP, but I do have IIS installed and it still hangs. Hope one of the site monitors posts a solution soon.
