Express install lockup

Hello!

I've downloaded the visual c++ express installer only to find that it locks up during its "Setup is loading installation components, this will take a minute or two" part. Keep in mind that I have no proir 'beta' versions installed on this machine. In fact it's a fresh install of winxp pro with all the updates.

Machine:
Amd64 3000+
1024meg ram
ATI Radeon 9800 Pro
and a pathetic keyboard w/out the space bar :)

    I tried changing the default browser back to IE => Still Same failure
    I tried to diasable both the firewall and the virus scanner => Still Same Failure
    I downloaded the .img files and extracted them => Still Same Failure

    Then I started the background intelligent transfer service and then it continued. I do not know if this was the reason but I know BITS can be needed sometimes (like for windows update).

    Sounds reasonable. I suppose we'll just have to wait and see how many people report this particular issue. If it's widespread enough, maybe somebody will look into it further.

    Hi, I have the same problem... hope someone (Microsoft) will fix it soon... I installed it yesterday on my NB and had no problem at all. Today - another PC, same WinXP SP2 - and it hangs.

    I believe it's got something to do with the installer. On my system, when I tried to install from the web installer it stopped and hung. I looked at my process and it showed that the setup.exe was using up 95% to 99% CPU. I'm not quite sure why it's hanging.. Seems to be hitting a loop. I don't believe it has anything to do with your system configuration. So I'd leave it be until someone with knowledge of what exactly is going on responds.

    I remember when they released the beta I had exactly the same problem as I had when installing the web installer. Within a week of release it was fixed. So, my guess is they haven't 'updated' the installer properly for all machines to run it. Then again.. I don't know the exact issue.

    I've found a 'solution'. What I did was I just downloaded the img files from the manual instructions link on the C#/C++/VB Express download page.

    It's a lenghtly download (if your on a low bandwidth connection) at 400+ megs. However the install seems to work just fine. Hope that helps..

    I considered it, but 400meg is almost half my monthy d/l allowance, so it'll have to be used only as a last resort.

    It's strange, i've been working with windows applications for what seems like centuries now and have never had a problem like this, where an app simlpy freezes on install - looks like I used to be lucky :)

    I imagine there to be a conflict on my machine that the installer cannot resolve - either something important isn't present, or the uninstall procedure didn't remove all that it was supposed to.

    I even thought about tinkering with shared dll's, but that could get messy.

    can you post last 50-100 lines of dd_vsinstall80.txt and dd_depcheck80.txt from your %temp% directory.

    Let's keep this one going and see if anyone comes up with a solution. I'm getting exactly the same problem with both Visual Basic AND C++ Express installs.

    Basically, the progress bar gets as far as the 'p' in the word 'component' and then appears to freeze. On looking at the task manager though, it's running at 50% cpu, so it's probably stuck in a loop or something.

    Now, I DID have the Beta 2 version installed (not Beta 1 though) and used the uninstall tool, as recommended, to remove it, but still got this problem. I've cleared all files I could find relating to .NET and Visual Basic as well as clearing the registry (as much as I dared), all to no avail.

    Beta 2 worked fine, but not the Express release it seems!

    Hardware:
    P4 3400
    1 gig RAM
    200 meg hd (150 free)

    Hi. That is the location where I originally downloaded the installation file and opens fine in the browser. I also made sure that it was not a firewall-related problem by disabling it completely before the installation.

    Nik it looks like setup is having problems accessing http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/ LinkId=51411&clcid=0x409 . Can you try to open it in internet explorer

    Same problem here. A crystal-clean install of Windows with SP2 with all updates. Setup freezes almost at the end. Tried uninstalling Windows Installer V3.1 and tried the VS Express 2005 installation with Windows Installer V2.0 but still same problem, so definitely the problem is not with Windows Installer. I hope Microsoft staff look into this thread in the near future as this seems to be a serious bug with the VS C# Express installer.

    I too have this lockup issue. My PC has a new copy of XP installed 2 days ago so I know its pretty clean.

    The 400 Meg download is pretty daunting as I only have a 1Gb cap on my connection.

    Lets hope we have a solution soon!
