Not able to create or open a project

Hello,

I just installed Visual C# Express, but I'm neither able to open nor create a new project.

When I try to create a new project, the VC# shows the following error in german language (because the version is running on a german winxp sp2)!

'Die Syntax fur den Dateinamen, Verzeichnisnamen oder die Datentragebezeichnung ist falsch. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8007007B)'

This means something seems to be wrong with the filename, folder or volume label.

When I try to open a project, the File dialog is freezing every time I'm going to change a folder for some seconds.

Any idea

Thanks
Stefan

Not able to create or open a project

    Hi Stefan,

Thanks a lot for providing me the pointer. I could reproduce this problem on my machine too with a login name that contains '&' in it.

This is certainly a bug that we would need to fix and is already being looked at.

There is a workaround available to get you unblocked for the time being.

Go to tools | options and check the option "Show all settings". Then go to "Projects & Solutions | General" and check the option "Save new projects when created".

When you create a new project, change the location of the project you want to create and you should be able to create projects now. When you open projects, you would have have to make sure that the path does not contain & in it.

Sorry for the inconvinience caused and please let me know if this workaround is acceptable for you.

Thanks for your time and patience,

    Suma [sumas@microsoft.com]

    Hi Stefan,

I am not able to understand why you could be seeing this issue since . I am sure that frameworks 1.1 and 2.0 are supported side by side on the same machine. But I am not sure if there could be German 1.1 and English 2.0 (that would have got installed along with final vs2005 express) side by side on the same machine.

I will find this out, first thing after the ongoing thanksgiving holidays here in US ( we are off on vacation from 11/24 to 11/27) and mail you on what I find out and any suggestions on remedies.

Sorry for the inconvinience you are having,

    Thanks,
    Suma

    Hello i'm Theodore

I just bought the book of visual C# 2005 and when i try to open the project of picture viewer that i downloaded from James Foxall's website a message appears :

"The application for project 'c:\...\picture viewer.vproj' is not installed.

Make sure the application for the project type (.vproj) is installed."

I would be grateful if you could help me

    Thanks in advance

    Hi Suma,

    thanks again for your support.
It seems a other user already found the problem as below:

    http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx PostID=148338&SiteID=1&mode=1

The answer I found suggested the problem is due to having an ampersand in my account name, e.g. I sign in as "A&B", and to sign in with another account (with out a & in the name).

I actually copied my whole account to "AB", reinstalled, and now everything is working.

Shame it only took the whole weekend to get it sorted out.

I do have also the '&' character in my login name.
Please can you advise whether this problem can be reproduced on your machine.
As it is difficult for me to change the login name I would highly appreciate to get an fixed version!!

    Many thanks in advance.

    brgds
    Stefan

    Hi Theodore,

Visual C# 2005 will be able to create/open only projects of type .csproj and my guess is that the project you are trying to open is not it.

Can you check this Is this a C# project created in Visual Studio product

    Thanks

    Hi Suma,

many thanks for your prompt reply.

on this machine no previous versions of Visual Studio were installed at all, neither VS2005beta nor 2003 nor VS6.

Only Framework 1.1 was installed for two german software applications I use.

Please advise what further informations could be helpful for you.

    Thanks

    Hi Suma,

    thanks for the workaround.
I added a new user in the meantime and it is working fine now :-)

I will also try your workaround as I can get rid of swapping between the users on my XP ;-)

When can we expect a update with a fix for this problem

    thanks
    Stefan

    Hi Stefan,

I am Suma Sushilendra from C# IDE team. I installed English version of Visual C# express on a clean German windows XP + SP2 machine and I am able to create and open projects without any problem.

I must say that the machine I installed on didn't have any previous version of Visual studio 2005 (Beta versions, CTPs etc) on it.

Could you please tell me if you had any previous versions of VS2005 on the machine before you installed this final version Please look into this http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/support/uninstall/
for the info on uninstalling previous versions of VS2005.

Thanks for taking time to bring ths to our attention, please answer the question above as to whether if you had any previous version of VS2005 on the machine and if yes, if you followed the steps to uninstall it completely.

    Regards,
