Hi. I run on Windows XP Professional SP1 and I really need Visual Basic .NET Express edition, as SharpDevelop2 is very buggy (atm). The thing is: I do not want SP2. Please do not flood me with comments such as "BUT OMFG SP2 PWNZZZ SP1 ! !" but tell me one good reason why to update into it. Not "security", not "more stable", but something real. Incase it comes with some updates needed by the Visual Studio's, why not make the user able to download them just like that, not some massive load of bugs
Is there a way to override the SP2 check

I do not want SP2. I do not want SP2.

I make my living as a computer tech. I make certain everyone of my clients has sp2 installed, for security (and this IS a REAL reason).
And NONE of my clients have a stability problem or any other problems that could be blamed on sp2.
Your neighbor had something odd happen, and I have not heard the general rumors of sp2 problems you allude to.
Perhaps he has a 3rd party program that is the real culprit

I'm sorry but Windows XP SP2 is a required update for both the Express editions and Visual Studio. There is no way to get around this.
Therefore you do have a good reason to update to SP2, to be able to use Visual Basic Express edition! ;)

1) Messing everything up
2) Being unstable
I have seen it in live action at my neighbour, needing to remove it from their computer.

Yes, you can uninstall SP2.
How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 2 from your computer
I have several machines that have been upgraded to SP2 and they're perfectly stable and I didn't have any issues upgrading. You may also want to read the following:

Why does MicroSoft need to come in the way of programming for some goddamn "user-friendly", "uberstable" service pack when I just want to create !

The only case one should have the option to decide on the security patches in his/her own comp is, if the comp NEVER connects to the internet. Any other time one should play it the safest possible, because one (if indirectly) shares responsibility for other people's problem. That's global community to you and everyone.

1) Can it be reverted back to SP1 without data loss
2) If I install it on a XPPro what has been running with SP1 for about 2 months, will it be stable
Oh wait, that's 2 questions, sorry.

Hey even i had thought about not installing the SP2. But I don't think it does anything bad to your PC. Don't just get influenced by what hppnd to your neighbour.
Just make sure you have original Windows XP and you download the SP2 from Microsoft site.
Just try it. I am sure you will not have any problems. The Express editions are worth the download trouble.

Microsoft gives everyone freedom of choice, you can either install SP2 and have the benefits of using other Microsoft products (including continued updates to Windows itself) or you can not install SP2 and not use those other products.
You want freedom of choice but you want Microsoft to not have the freedom to set the requirements for their own products...
We have 80 or so workstations installed with XP SP2, none of them has any performance or stability degradation since upgrading from SP1.
The only problems we encountered were with our anti-virus software which needed an upgrade to properly function under SP2, something quickly provided by the manufacturer of that.
Of course if you don't have licensed versions of your software you will not get such upgrades, but I can't see people in software development being pirates (and yes, that was sadly rather sarcastic as I see software developers who are dedicated pirates every day).

You could try installing SP2 and uninstall it if you are having problems.
Have you had any problems installing SP2 previously
If you still don't want to install SP2, then you won't be able to install one of the Express editions.

I can't believe you really think that... You better stop relying on what you "see" on someone else's system! And start reading, learning and understanding things by yourself and with your head.
Or move to a different town (and make sure your new neighbours are less stupid than that).
SP2 doesn't mess anything up, and doesn't make XP unstable. Unless you try to install it on a already messed-up system and/or with bad or outdated device drivers or programs, bringing all the underlying problems up (and dumb people believe it's an SP2 fault...).
Btw, no question about it: if you want VS2005 you MUST install SP2. Stop.
