I have msvs.net 2003 [edit]Professional[/edit] (academic) installed - can I install any of the express products alongside it or are there likely to be compatibility issues If there are, what are they
I have installed several Express products on a machine with VS.NET 2003. So far, I have not had any problems, though I just started to use the Express products (Web Developer, C#, C++).
Side-by-side installation of Visual Studio 2003 and Visual Studio 2005 is also supported with the final version. Feel free to install any of the Visual Studio 2005 products on machines with Visual Studio 2003 already installed. Both products will work. Though, of course, once you start using VS 2005, you won't want to go back to VS 2003.

(see http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/express/faq/default.aspx ) and it went fine. I've only done some very preliminary checking but I note that the 2005 express installation replaces file associations (c, cpp, h etc) so if, like me, you have other editors also configured to associate with these file types you'll need to take that into consideration. The msvs.net 2003 solution files (*.sln) are marked as such and are still properly associated with that version.

I went ahead and installed the c++ express on the basis of the following faq for the beta product:

Is there any compatibility issues between 2003 and 2005
