Visual Studio RC1 + Foundation Server Beta 3

Hi,

Can somebody clarify the following for me please.

I have Foundation server Beta 3 installed on a server machine and Visual Studio Release candidate installed on a VPC on a seperate workstation.

1. Can the two interoperate OK
2. The server was created within a Domain but the workstation is standalone in a workgroup.  Will it be able to connect to the Server OK
3. I installed the team test and developer options in my Visual Studio installation do I still need to install the client from the Foundation Server CD to get connectivity I thought by installing the Team test/dev options this was the client tools.

Cheers.

    Hi,

I went in the order of SQL Server, VS2005 RC1 and then TFS Beta 3 and everything is working fine.

The Team Explorer bit is a extention to VS2005 so, I think its necessary to have VS2005 installed before you install the Team Explorer part.

    Hi,

    1. The two interoperate.

    2. I think the workstation needs to be on the domain.

    3. The Client tools are part of TFS and will not be installed with RC1 - you need to install from TFS Beta 3

Additionally TFS beta 3 supports a single machine installation. You can install SQL Server 2005 Sept CTP + VS2005 RC1 and TFS Beta 3 all on the same machine and it would work fine.

    Hi,

I 've installed SQL Server 2005 sept CTP + TFS Beta 3 + team explorer all on the same machine and it works.
Now I want to install VS2005 RC1 on this same machine but I get an error. I suppose I 've to uninstall first serveral application and then install VS2005 RC1. Will TFS Beta 3 still be working or should I first install SQL Server, then VS2005 RC1 and then TFS Beta 3

    Hi,

Yes that is the case. Team Explorer will be included with TFS and will not be part of VS2005 SKU. You can read more about this from this thread below:

    Hi Vikram,

Thanks for your answer. Last night I installed VS2005 RC1 on a different machine to have a look first. I suppose I 've to install TeamExplorer on this machine as well to be able to connect to TFServer Anyway I'll find out tonight.

It took me 4 setup tries to get TFS working so I 'm not very found on uninstalling TFS and reinstalling it. It works right now and I hope to keep it that way.

    regards,

    Kris

    Beta 3 TFS working fine
    VS RC1 working fine
See Team menu, created work items fine

Where's the standalone Team Explorer client so I can see what "normal" people would interact with Can't seem to find it...

    Hi,

Thats a safe option - to install VS2005 on another machine. And yes, you would need to install the Team Explorer part from the TFS Beta 3 CD on the VS2005 RC1 to be able to connect to TFS.

Cheers for that.  I know with previous versions I had to put the machine on the same domain I just wondered if this was still the case.  I might give it a go without first just to see what happens.

Out of curiosity does anybody know if it will be the case with release versions that you will need a seperate Visual Studio Client install to connect to TFS.
