TFS Server Sizing

Hi there

I've recently enjoyed Etienne Trembley’s webcast “Adopting Visual Studio Team System”. Etienne uses Brian Harrys server sizing data. Our team is about 35 people, so apparently we’ll only need the smallest configuration surgested, that is 3.4GHz, 1GB, 1 x 10K rpm SCSI (though we recognize Bians huge disclaimer).

Etienne recommends using a virtual single server installation for teams of our size. Brian Harry suggests upping the memory on the box from 1GB to 2GB (at least) because of the two OSs (host and virtual) running on it.

Has anyone tried this at home How big would you size the (virtual) server

Best regards,

We are running a Virtual Server environment with approximately 13 people on, with a very good box (2 proc 64bit, 16 gigs ram, 10k harddrives, etc) and 2 gigs of allocated Ram. The performance has been OK, not good, not horrible, but passable. We are migrating this to a dedicated server and rolling it out to more people (~45). If you can manage it, get a dedicated box. We had some issues with the virtual server and we had a really bad incident were we lost power, found out the UPS was bad, and the virtual server hard drive was completely trashed. I'm convinced if this had not been a virtual server we wouldn't have had these problems. Also, Brian Harry's server sizing chart was for Team Size, not concurrent users and also included non-developers (at least that was the impression I got).
