I do not have a reference to share, but I can offer a high-level explanation. Area and Iteration are meant to be used for classification of artifacts in TFS. If you are extending the system and you provide support for classifying the things generated by your tool using Area and Iteration, you allow the user to implicitly relate those things to other things of interest within the tool suite. Reports over data in the warehouse can then be used to help visualize those relationships using time (Iteration) or the logical decomposition of the system (Area).
