Error 29109

Hi,

I'm trying to install Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server and I've gone through the checklist but when I try to install the product I get the following message:

Error 29109: Team Foundation Report Server Configuration: Report Server Configuration encountered an unknown problem. Verify that you have sufficient permissions to configure Report Server, and try again.

Any ideas

Thanks,

Reza Shams

    Thank you for your response...

I beleive that I understand what you are saying... It sounds like...

SP2 for SQL is fine to run on APP and DATA tier

QDR patch is to help install SP1 for Foundation server on APP tier where SP2 for SQL Reporting services already exists

This is exactly what I am trying to do. I have SQL reporting services on APP tier with SP2 for SQL installed and in order to install TFS SP1 the MS instructions say to apply the GDR patch. At the very end of the patch install I get the Error:29109

    Hello etropic,

You don't need to recreate the app tier.

    Here are some details for:

you've already successfully installed SP1 for TFS, you don't need to go back and mess with it, but you should install the new quiescing patch before you apply any new fixes or service packs.

SP1 for TFS is the service package for Team Foundation Server which is also included in SP1 for VS 2005.

The problem in the previous posts is that SP1 for TFS cannot be installed in a TFS server where is already a SP2 for SQL Server 2005.

Please notice SP2 for SQL Server 2005 is for SQL Server database not for the Team Foundation Server.

The new quiescing patch is helping to install SP1 for TFS at TFS Server which has SP2 for SQL Server 2005.

    Hope these help.

You can certainly look in the VSMsi*.txt (setup log file) and look for the error. The custom action that generates this message does write additional information to the log.

Since you think this might be a domain issue I'll close this, but feel free to open it back up if need be

You probably have all already figured this one out by now but this if for people who havent been able to figure out this error message with other information on the web.

My advice is to try the following:
When installing use the TSSETUP domain account that you should have created.
Make sure this user is a member of the local admins group on the server.

If you already installed SQL Reporting Services on the TFS server without following the install instructions remove SQL Reporting Services and install it the following way:

I used a Dual-tier server installation but this should work for both.

    Follow line by line.

Install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services

Install SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services by using Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard or Enterprise Edition. Team Foundation Server includes a licensed copy of Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition.

    Note

You must install Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0 before you install Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services.

    1. On the application-tier computer, log on to Windows using the Team Foundation Server Setup account; for example, Domain\TFSSETUP.
    2. Insert the CD for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and under Install on the SQL Server 2005 Start page, click Server components, tools, Books Online, and samples.

    Note

The CD for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Standard edition is available with Team Foundation Server. To install SQL Server Enterprise, you can use the CD from the software you purchased separately. The Start page is available by running the Splash.hta file located in the Servers folder of the installation media.

The Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Setup wizard starts.

    1. On the End User License Agreement page, review the license agreement. If you accept the terms and conditions, select I accept the license terms and conditions, and then click Next.
    2. On the Installing Prerequisites page, click Install. After the required components are installed successfully, click Next.
The Microsoft SQL Server Installation Wizard starts.
    3. Click Next to start the System Configuration Check.
    4. On the System Configuration Check page, examine the status of any required actions, such as required system restarts and follow the guidance on this page until all actions achieve Success status. After all actions achieve Success status, click Next to start installation.

    Note

It may take several moments for the installer to start.

    1. On the Registration Information page, complete the registration information, and then click Next.
    2. On the Components to Install page, select Reporting Services, and then click Next.

    Note

If you click Advanced, do not remove any default selections.

    1. On the Instance Name page, select Default instance, and then click Next.

    Important

Team Foundation Server setup will fail if you specify a named instance.

    1. On the Service Account page, select Use the built-in System account and from the list, select Network Service. In Start services at the end of setup, select Reporting Services, and then click Next.
    2. On the Report Server Installation Options page, click Next.
      By default,
Install but do not configure the server is selected.
    3. On the Error and Usage Report Settings page, you can optionally select Automatically send Error reports for SQL Server 2005 to Microsoft or your corporate error reporting server and Automatically send Feature Usage data for SQL Server 2005 to Microsoft, and then click Next.
    4. On the Ready to Install page, you can review the list of components to be installed, and then click Install.
    5. On the Setup Progress page, you can monitor the installation status of each component. After setup has completed, click Next.

    Note

Installation may appear to stop responding for several minutes during activation of SQL Server Reporting Services.

    1. Click Finish to exit the wizard.

    Caution

Do not use the Reporting Services Configuration Tool to verify that the services are running. Team Foundation Server Setup Wizard configures the Reporting Services for you and opening the tool might prevent setup from completing.

Next try reinstalling Team Foundation Server and let me know if it works.

    Thanks

    Hello Jedi21,

Do you have the same problem

Do the previous suggestions solve the problem for you

    Thanks.

  • rbalt

I had the same problem, with so many tries I figured it out to be Service pack version for Reporting services on App tier was causing this problem. No matter what version of SP for SQL server on Data tier you need to have SP 1 only (and only) for reporting services on App tier. this help me in fixing this problem. This sounds little crazy though.

I had SP2 on datatier and I installed SP2 for Reporting services on App tier. It kept on giving "Product: Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 Team Foundation Server (services) - ENU -- Error 29109.Team Foundation Report Server Configuration: Report Server Configuration encountered an unknown problem. Verify that you have sufficient permissions to configure Report Server, and try again." error.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks

    Here is the problem:

The account is an administrator on the box, but since it's inside the corporate domain there might be some local or group policies causing the problems. So, my question is how can I decrypt the message and find out what is the exact cause of the problem.

    Thanks,

    Reza Shams

You should say hello to your old friend Giv ... and the problem will be solved.
  • TheZbuffer

    thanks for the reply...

I am already using the V2 patch. And get the 29109 error.

I followed the install instructions dated April 13, 2007 to the letter, except that I installed SQL SP2 on app and data tier not SP1.

At this point, should I recreate the app tier and use SP1 Or is there some setting that SP2 set that TFS (gdr) doesn't like
