Team Foundation RC install Failures, Dr Watson

Hi,

I have been trying for serveral days to try to figure out what the heck is going on with this install. The issues I have ran into was during the install on TFS (RC), I keep getting these watson failures. I am so stumped on why this is doing this.

I have everything else working fine such as sharepoint, reporting/SQL.

Here is the last line of the error log file.

Team Foundation RC install Failures, Dr Watson

  • Rick B USA

    Hi!

Solution was to set tfsservice and tfsreport accounts at the administrative group prior to TFS server upgrade. As upgrade ended, these accounts were removed from admins.

Also, specific parameters (SSL, etc.) were set to its defaults prior to upgrade.

I noticed that uninstallation of the prior RC version has not removed “TfsWorkItemTracking Process Identities Job” from the SQL2005 job list so I manually removed it from the list.

For the last 4 weeks TFS server has been tested and it works perfectly.

    Excellent job Microsoft!

    My best regards,

    V.

    Hi Karl,

Thank you very much for your analysis and, yes it is true that problem is not in CustomText.1033.dll. But, as I can remember, I haven’t found any other errors in the log.

Only a message box appeared showing error: “Error 28100.Error loading Event web service.”

I looked in other threads for this 28100 error.

I will try to do another approach this Saturday:

    (0. Backup disk)

    1. Upgrade and backup DBs using tool: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/ LinkID=60341

    2. Uninstall all…TFS, TExplorer, SQL2005,...,SharePoint, IIS.

    3. Install all from the “scratch”

    4. Restore upgraded DBs (upgraded by TFSUpgradeRTM.exe servername )

    5. Finish DB upgrade process as it is in document:

“Upgrading from Team Foundation Server RC to Team Foundation Server RTM.doc”

    located at tool (1.)

Our TFS Server is put on SSL and ports are not “standard” ones. Furthermore, there are too many “custom factors” which can influence setup and, as I can see, the best is to redo/reinstall all…install…and, at the end restore DBs, set our specific parameters back.

I hope that TFSUpgradeRTM.exe tool is correct one, because it clamed that our DB is Beta 3. But we did clean RC install. I hope that this is just hard coded string.

    Thanks,

    Vlado

    Sanske,

From the event in the event log, it looks like your setup user is a local user. Is this the case Are also using local users (not domain users) for your service and reporting accounts during setup

    Thanks,
    Erin

    Hello,

I am trying to install the AT/DT portion of the install. It runs though teh health check then when the actual install starts. it Dr. Watsons. I'm not sure why its doing this. Is there a sections of the log files that I should be looking at

    Thanks

  • Navdeep98296

I am having the same issue. The logs seem to match up verbatum with with Sanske. I have performed the install twice now for a Single-Server deployment. Both times on a clean fresh install of Windows 2003 SP1 on Virtual Server images. (This install is just for testing. I understand the beefy requirements of TFS for a regular environment.) The second time I performed the install, I throughly performed it step by step using the install guide. BTW, this is the RTM version.

All I installed was just the items on the check list. Maybe there is more Also, the server is a stand-alone server and I used local accounts for TFS services. All accounts are in the administrator's group. I am also trying to install the AT/DT portion.

Sanske, did you solve this issue

    Thanks,

    David Maltby

    Hi

From other topics here are some other possible solutions:

    a) “As a workaround, can you try adding the service account to the admin group on AT ”

    b) “I added the tfsservice and the tfsreports accounts to my local admin group and that allowed me to get by this error. I did this while the retry box was still open. I added the accounts and did an IIReset and clicked the "Retry" button and it worked. I am now getting another error calling the createds.exe file trying to talk to SQL Server Reporting services...”

    c) “The solution to give the TFSSERVICE account Create/Write rights on C:\WINDOW

    S\TEMP worked”

    d) “Another possibility is that the server is having trouble locating the web services if it is using an HTTP proxy. Can you check that the server is configured to bypass the proxy for local addresses ”

    Hi

I’m having same problem upgrading ATDT RC -> RTM.

First, error message box appears: “Error 28100.Error loading Event web service.”

Setup log is same as it is shown in the first post.

It seams that CustomText.1033.dll has missing string ID=2000.

When I open CustomText.1033.dll as resource in VStudio…string table has only item ID=1000

Is it possible that resource exception breaks the installation

Is it possible that RTM ISO image, downloaded today from MSDN, is corrupted

    Best regards,

    Vlado

    P.S. I have used:

    Upgrade DB tool: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/ LinkID=60341

    and en_vs_2005_tfs_trial.iso image downloaded today.

P.S.S. Should I try setup procedure like :

    1. Upgrade and backup DBs

    2. Uninstall all…IIS, SQL2005...

    3. Install all from the “scratch”

    4. Stop TFS services

    5. Restore DBs

    6. Finish upgrade process as it is in document:

Upgrading from Team Foundation Server RC to Team Foundation Server RTM.doc

    Hello,

I am also seeing the errors in the setup log regarding CustomText.1033.dll, however I am not convinced that this is the cause of the install failure, atleast not in my case!

I actually modified the dll to include a string ID of 2000 and gave it a value of "Hello World", my installation still failed and still caused a Dr Watson error, but the errors relating to the missing string where gone .

Upon further investigation I found the following errors in the VMsiLog file: -

    Action start 13:18:41: CA_Config_TBWeb.3643236F_FC70_11D3_A536_0090278A1BB8.
    MSI (s) (70:A0) [13:18:41:947]: Doing action: ConfigureSql
    Action ended 13:18:41: CA_Config_TBWeb.3643236F_FC70_11D3_A536_0090278A1BB8. Return value 1.
MSI (s) (70:D0) [13:18:41:947]: Invoking remote custom action. DLL: C:\WINDOWS\Installer\MSIE.tmp, Entrypoint: ConfigureSql
    Action start 13:18:41: ConfigureSql.

ConfigureSql: Error 0x80004005: Failed to ensure database CurrituckDB.B2EE1347_FB46_4501_B04E_27DC0C95366D exists

    MSI (s) (70:A0) [13:18:57:963]: Note: 1: 1402 2: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\Rollback\Scripts 3: 2
Action ended 13:18:57: ConfigureSql. Return value 3.

See Thread http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx PostID=338817&SiteID=1 for more information.

Just prior to the error shown above I am seeing some errors relating to failed attempts to login to the SQL server, but I have come to the conclusion that the logins failed because they where trying to connect specifying the default database as STS_CONFIG_TFS and STS_CONTENT_TFS, these databases do not exist yet as the Windows Sharepoint Service has not been provisioned. So I am assuming these error are normal. They dont seem to stop the install from continuing and I am assuming that at some later stage in the install the required databases would be created.

Are you getting similar errors in VMsiLog file I have still not resolved the issue but I am not focusing on the missing string id as the root cause of the problem.

    Best Regards

    Karl

    Hello all,

yes I still have not got passed this error. I have tried this install from scratch once and again to come to back to the evil Dr. after a day of installing and verifying everything. So now sure what the deal is at this point. I hope someone could shed some bright lights on this.

    Thanks

  • Bobby Ortiz

Sorry you are having trouble with the install.

Can you give some more details about your problem Are you trying to install the AT, the DT or the Client part of Team Foundation Server

    Thanks,

    Hi David,

I still have not resolved my install of TFS yet. One things I noticed in the event log was:

And taking a closer look into the dd_vsinstall80.txt fiel above these errors several times.:

I wonder is these are related somehow. The user I use (tfssetup) is in the local administrator group.

Any help or suggestions would be great.

    Thanks

    Hello all,

There are two differences in install/upgrade documents.

1…At the beginning of the install instruction (TFSInstall-v60317.chm):

“To upgrade from Beta 3 Refresh to the release candidate, download the upgrade package from the Microsoft Downloads Center (http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/ LinkID=60341) and follow the upgrade instructions for Team Foundation servers. For new installations, follow the instructions in this guide.”

As I can see, this link 60341, points to upgrade tool for Beta3 -> RC. There is no mention of RC -> RTM database upgrade. But, when downloaded tool 60341 (TFSUpgradePackageRTM.EXE) and when it is unpacked, there are different documents about Beta3->RTM and RC->RTM. They both use TFSUpgradeRTM.exe for upgrade tool. When I executed TFSUpgradeRTM.exe the output was “Beta3”. But it finished all upgrade tasks with success.

2….In the installing instructions check list “Checklist: Team Foundation Server Single-Server Deployment“ (it is for ATDT configuration) only difference in prior to RC checklist is:

    SQLServer hotfix KB914595

This KB is for some memory/reporting problem…maybe we should avoid its installation and move it to the end of installation…

    Document TFSInstall:

After you install Microsoft SQL Server 2005, you must install the hotfix that updates SQL Server Analysis Services that supports reporting more efficiently.“

    But at upgrade document:

You must install an update for SQL Server (KB914595) before you install Team Foundation Server RTM or you might experience problems with your computer memory.“

This tell about memory problem and maybe source of the evil Dr. is there.

    Best regards,

    Vlado

    Hi Erin,

The account that I have setup for setup, service, and reporting are all local users. The server name is "sasudgdb" and the tfssetup user is in the Administrator group.

I have tried using a domain user that is also part of the administrators group on the local machine and get the same error.

I do get the same error in the events but the only diffrence is what user I used to do this install as.

I appears like during the actual TFS install, the user/service tries to login but get rejected some how. Could it be NTFS permissions

    stumped on this...
