The Work Items node has a Red x and does not display any work items. The Documents and Reports nodes appear as they should and expand to show their individual items
This from Team Explorer on a host machine linked to TFS in a VPC image on the same physical box.
From Team Explorer within the same VPC image there is no issue all nodes appear normally.

I have the same problem, but on normal computers. It appeared after adding a new computer to domain and a new user to TFS , reports and sharepoint. The new user has the red X on the Workitems node.
Everything else is ok.

The desktop and the VPC were in the same domain.
However it was a resolution issue.
The Red X fix was to add the IP address and machine name:
xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx machineName workgroupName\machineName
to the accessing machine's Hosts file located at:
c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
