So what happens when Orcas comes out?

Will the people buying TFS and TS right now need to pay for an upgrade

All I know so far is the whole WinFX deal, so Avalon, Indigo, and the other new technology, and LINQ. I know those were slated for this upcoming release. I can't imagine the TS and TFS groups making major changes so quickly. I would also imagine that Atlas will be integrated and fully released by then as well. It seems like more of a "surrounding technology" release than "core change" release, which I think is cool because it makes .NET what they wanted from the beginning. I just hope we don't have to pay too much for that vision.

I would bet on it. Microsoft is shelling out the bucks to build it, so I would assume they would want to have a return on that investment.

They just changed the name of WinFX, the major purpose of Orcas, to .NET 3.0.

I'm sure there will be an upgrade path that will be much less expensive than purchasing VSTF for the first time. VSTF Server is not very expensive anyhow, it's the CALs that can get pricy depending on how many CALs you need.

I also highly doubt that Orcas will be nothing more than a bunch of bug fixes. MS will bundle more features, otherwise there will be no real driver to purchase the new product. I give them an "A" for listening to the developer community through the beta and CTP program, and I believe they will do the same with the V1.

Right, and that's what I'm talking about. What Team System specific upgrades could possibly be planned for such a quick release cycle I know Orcas will be more than bug fixes but my question is with respect to Team System, not the core editing functionality of Visual Studio.

I haven't heard of anything changing with regards to TS features in Orcas, so what would you be paying for only 6-8 months after the inital release of Team System Really sucks that a year after VS 2005 comes out we'll be shelling out even more cash to code against .NET 3.0.

This is where your Software Assurance (SA) subscription comes into play. Simply put, if your SA subscription has not expired, you're entitled to new releases of software for which you have SA. If you purchased SA when you purchased your Team Foundation Server license, you're entitled to new released - provided the subscription hasn't expired.

For more information about Software Assurance and receiving new versions, see: New Version Rights

Thanks for setting me straight on .NET 3.0. Hopefully someone from Microsoft will let us know what features are slated for the next release.
