Using Team Explorer outside VS 2005 Team Suite.

Hi,

is it possible to use the 'light weight' Team Explorer client app outside of VS 2005 - I'm using Beta 2.

The scenario is; I'm developing in both VB6 and VS 2005. I want to migrate the old VB6 source code in to Team Server. I know I will loose what VSS integration I had in VB6, so I need someway of checking out files when I'm not in VS 2005. Does that make sense

I have tried installing the Client part of Team Foundation on my dev machine which has VS 2005 already installed. Once the setup had finished I still couldn't find any shortcut to the Team Explorer (except in the VS IDE).

TIA

Graham

    Thanks Buck.

I tried installing on a non VS machine and it seemed to install VS, or just it's shell anyway, and from there the Team Explorer was available. Is this as expected

To be honest, for some reason I was expecting to see some sort of 'Normal' Windows application, rather then VS 2005.

There is a lighter-weight version that was called Team Foundation Client in beta 2 and is now called Team Explorer (which is also the name of a window in VS).  You can install Team Foundation Client on a machine that doesn't have VS2005 installed.  If you install it on a machine with VS2005, it would integrate with the existing VS installation.

Ah, okay, I see the confusion.  It is indeed the VS shell hosting the GUI, but it doesn't have the compiler, debugger, etc. that you would find with an installation of VS.  It just contains the pieces you need to work with TFS.
