Good idea.  However, I do not have any other versions of Management Studio on this box.  The only thing I have is Enterprise Manager for Sql Server 2000. Also, I have not yet installed any of the Visual Studio 2005 variants yet.

    Thanks.

Is the SQL Server Books Online working without these keys :)

I installed SQL Server 2005 Express and Management Studio Express (CTP November). When I try to launch the management studio nothing happens....I'm very confused about it, because I tried to search a solution for hours, but I didn't find anything about it.

    Me Again.
Deleteing the Key on my work machine worked.
Maybe it was left behind by one of the SQL Express Beta Programs, as I had many of them installed on my machine over the last year.

    Anyway, it's working now :-)

I'm in the same boat here with my XP sp2 machine.  Click and then "nothing".

    Deleting the following key:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Shell

fixed my problem. I think it was left over from the beta2 install

I also have this exact same problem and it's happened on 2 out of the 3 machines I've tried.

It worked on my Windows 2003 SBS but not on Windows XP SP2 machines.

All have the required components installed.
When I click the icon to launch the application the cursors changes to an Egg timer for a fraction of a second and then nothing. Nothing is in the Process tree of Task manager or there's no Events in the Event Log.

Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Books Online set this entry. I've deleted the "shell" key and the books online stop working. After this I reinstalled the BOL and Management Studio stopped working. Interesting. :)

    Thanks for the help. :)

Management Studio Express doesn't run side-by-side with the full version of Management Studio.  If you have any version of Management Studio installed on your machine, Management Studio can't start.

There is supposed to be a message box that pops up in that case explaining the problem, but for some reason I haven't been able to diagnose, it isn't appearing for most people.

I also have no other versions of Management Studio on my machine or ever had until I put Management Studio Express onto it.

I've installed it on my home machine since, and it works fine. but doesn't load on my work machine. No Idea what it is.

Does this registry key exist on your machine (You can check by running regedit to view your registry.  Be careful not to change anything when running regedit - it's a very unforgiving tool.)

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Tools\Shell

If this key does exist, SSMSE probably thinks you have the full SSMS on your machine.
