Currently I have following things installed on my Computer
1. SQL Server Express 2005
2. SQL Server Management Studio Express 2005 CTP
I need to install following things
A. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services
B. Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit
Do I need to uninstall any any of 1 or 2
What should be my path to upgrade these software.

Upgrading from 'SQL Server Express 2005' to 'SQL Server Express 2005 with Advance Services'

Hi Kevin,
The error you're seeing typically means that the installation options you've picked will result in some RTM and some SP1 components. If you're upgrading from Express to Express Advanced and installing everything, I found that this error is mis-leading and to date I've ignored it without impact.
In my various tests I never had a problem running Management Studio Express after installation, so I'm not sure what happened there; I'm glad to hear a re-boot solved the issue.

The offical download page doesn't mention upgrades. The link I attached is good but not complete as it doesn't mention the RTM to SP1 issue. It's hard to tell how much the advanced features overlap with the toolkit and theres nothing that I could find about installing both. Also I feel that finding and downloading products in general is a bit counter intuitive on the microsoft website - over simplified in the wrong places. As for using the software... great so so far
All in good time I expect, it's still new.
That's far more than my 2 cents worth.

Here are the instructions I followed but they may not apply to you when installing the Toolkit on top of Advanced Services.
http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress/archive/2006/04/20/UpgradeToAdvanced.aspx
I ran into the following problem when trying to install everything from Advanced Services (from Express after following the above instructions):
The following components will be installed:
SQL Server Database Services (Upgrade)
(Database Services, Replication, Full-Text Search)
Client Components (Upgrade)
(Connectivity Components, Management Studio Express)
Warning: Setup found that the following components that already exist are at a different service pack level than the components being installed.
Components: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Tools Express Edition
After completing setup, you must download and apply the latest SQL Server 2005 service pack to all the components.
My summary log said everything installed fine, got told some information about security and so everything seemed to work....
Started Management Studio Express and it threw an unhandled exception...
(on a side note I don't have Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) installed so whatever needed that was not installed, I think it is unlikely that this caused the SMSE error)
I'll be keeping an eye on this thread!

Thanks for the feedback Kevin,
We're always working to improve the experience for Express users, so we'll put these to good use. Aside from any changes we can make to the download page, I wanted to address a few of your question here in the forum...
Database Engine - The toolkit does not contain a database engine, that is an error on the page and I'll have it corrected.
Upgrading - As you've surmized, you can upgrade from Express RTM using either the Express SP1 package or the Express Advance package. Both are actually SP1 level. There is currently an "issue" when upgrading from Express RTM to Express Advanced that causes a failure during upgrade. We are working on correcting the problem and in the meantime have a workaround posted to the SQL Express Blog which is linked to from the acutall download page. (The blog is at http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlexpress if you're interested.)
The MS web site - I'll pass this information on to the the folks that run the web site.

Hi Kevin,
What do you consider the "main download page " When I look at http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/download/, it povides guidance in step 3 on installing the different members of the Express family and it has a specific statement about installing Express Advanced and the Toolkit, here is the quote:
"Do you want SQL Server Express with all the additional development tools Download SQL Server Express with Advanced Services and the SQL Server Express Toolkit. "
Is there some way we could have made a more clear statement that installing both is acceptable (and possibly even recomended)
You can find a high level comparison of the different members of the Express family at http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/compare/default.aspx, which is available from the SQL Express "link menu" on the left hand side of the MSDN site when you're in the SQL Express section.
I'm interested in know where you first sought information about installing SQL Express and more about what specifically you'd like to see and how you think it could have been more clear. Odds are most your questions are actually answered already on the site, it just wasn't discovered. It's always a strugle to get the right trade-off between having enough information to be clear, but not so much as to make a page confusing or so long that no one will read it.
I'll see what I can do about making it more clear about the general upgrade path, but you've probly determined already that Express RTM can be updated using either Express SP1 or Express Advanced, which contains SP1.
Thanks for the feedback.

I agree that all the information is probably on the microsoft website it's just hard to find.
"Do you want SQL Server Express with all the additional development tools Download SQL Server Express with Advanced Services and the SQL Server Express Toolkit."
Ok, I want both, that's cool... but what exactly is in both ...
http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/sql/compare/default.aspx
... Brilliant, pity I couldn't find the link. In fact I still cannot find it! Where is the "link menu"
So search for ["Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition with Advanced Services" and "Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition Toolkit"]
The comparison isn't in the first ten results. Let's assume I somehow found it...
I then find out that BOTH downloads include the Database engine (when I installed it I had no idea how much overlapped). Will it ask me to uninstall the first one Can I get just an add on In fact I already have SQL Express that comes with VS2005 so why can't I just get an add on If i unistall Express will I loose settings
Similar problems with the version differences. I don't have SP1 and had no idea if it would effect anything. Wish I knew that "Express RTM can be updated using either Express SP1 or Express Advanced, which contains SP1."
I can't find the right links, the search engine returns far too much so I use google which has a much better search engine. If I really want I'll try to use google to search the msdn.microsoft.com domain only.
That's a pretty good commentory of what I actually did. The only thing I left out is that I used google in search for many non-microsoft sites in the general hope that I would find a forum like this. Pretty much all I found was this forum which had no replies.
I use the web a lot and really don't like the microsoft website because I never seem to find what I want on it, and I'm pretty good at finding pretty much anything. So either my approach to websites conflicts with microsoft's overall style or the microsoft website needs major changes to it's layout.
Hope this helps. Any more questions
