SP1 Installation Failure for Reporting Services Instances

The upgrade was alright for my first/default instance of reporting services but failed for the other 3 non-default instances.

I was running SP1 using remote desktop connection.

I got the following error at the report manager and the reporting services configuration's initialization. Is there any way to get around this

The version of the report server database is either in a format that is not valid, or it cannot be read. The found version is 'C.0.8.40'. The expected version is 'C.0.8.43'. To continue, update the version of the report server database and verify access rights. (rsInvalidReportServerDatabase)

SP1 Installation Failure for Reporting Services Instances

    I seem to have the same issue with multiple instances (7) of the database engine running. SP1 installed fine on my other (6) instances. It only failed on the instance running analysis services, database engine and reporting services.

    Any ideas

    Timothy, can you search your RS hotfix log directory (%windir%\Hotfix\RS9\Logs) for the string "return value 3" If that is in the log, can you post the 20 or so lines above and below the error message

    Timothy, I tried to repro this and was unable to. I have a machine with multiple RS instances as well as several other components/instances installed. The logs should be able to help debug.

    Gahhh... don't you just hate finding the exact same problem, and no answer at the end of the thread. I have installed SP1 twice, hence have 6 rs9_hotfix files. I cannot find any instance of 'return value 3'.

    Incidentally, this (event id 117, source is Report Server Windows) is followed by event id 107, source is the same. Text for this is 'Report Server Windows Service (INSTANCE1) cannot connect to the report server database. A logical outcome I guess, but thought I should include it.

    EDIT:  Sysinternals FileMon shows a couple of suspicious-looking file not found errors.  The ReportingServic process looks for c:\windows\microsoft.net\framework\v2.0.50727\version.dll but the file is not present.  I searched the contents of \framework\ downwards but no luck.  The same process also gets a 'path not found' when trying to locate various objects in c:\windows\assembly\GAC...

    Anyone any ideas

    I have the same problem.

    The version of the report server database is either in a format that is not valid, or it cannot be read. The found version is 'C.0.8.43'. The expected version is 'C.0.8.40'. To continue, update the version of the report server database and verify access rights. (rsInvalidReportServerDatabase) Get Online Help

    I only had 1 instance of reporting services and it failed to update it properly.

    No "return value 3" in RS9 update logs.

    Right, I found something from ages ago that suggested a similar problem with SQL 2000, and the cause (allegedly - I don't know how plausible this is) was that the ownership of the stored procedures was assigned to a user, rather than dbo, and that dropping and recreating the SPs with dbo as owner solved the issue. I checked the properties pages of the SPs in my DB, but don't see an 'owner' attribute. Maybe someone with more experience of SQL Server could clarify what this is about

    EDIT:  http://www.techlog.nl/archives/archive_2006-m04.php suggests that this is a known issue that was allegedly fixed by SP1.  I can get MS support going on this one, but I need to know exactly which hotfix within SP1 was supposed to fix it.  Anyone

    I have posted an extensive article on my blog that describes the solution to this and how to avoid it to begin with.

    The short of it is that you can fix this issue by using the Upgrade button on the Database Setup tab of the Reporting Services Configuration Tool.
