Are there any log files created under:
%ProgramFiles%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG
If so, you can start by looking at Summary.txt. It should give you some indication of which component failed. Then you should be able to delve into the specific log file of the failed component. If you'd like, zip up the LOG directory and send it to me and I'll have a look (jeff.papiez@microsoft.com)

This might sound stupid but i copied the "SQL Server x86" folder from the DVD onto my local hard drive and ran the "\SQL Server x86\Servers\setup.exe" from the hard drive copy to install the server components. Lo and behold everything worked fine.
