SQL Server 2005 Management Studio can't be found

Sorry if someone already covered this, but I can't find anything about it.

I just installed (3 hours ago actually) SQL2005 Standard Edition (from the Launch event) on my machine, and i don't seem to have a shortcut to the SQL Server 2005 Management Studio anywhere.

I looked for a likely executable, but couldn't find it anywhere.  This wouldn't bother me as much if I could use Enterprise Manager from 2K, but SQL2005 will not allow it to register.

How do I get this going   There are people here that want to inspect it's features, etc.  I haven't got anything to show them.

Answer this question

SQL Server 2005 Management Studio can't be found

  • Richard Šusta

I deleted the entire SQL2005 installation, and re-installed it again. That worked.

I didn't have any previous version on that machine, but it happened anyway. I still have no idea why, and I really don't care at this point. I just re-installed and skulked away quietly.

I'm having similar problems. First I uninstalled SQL Server Express and then installed SQL Server Workgroup checking complete intstall options. This machine has VS2005 installed on it. After the install I can't locate SQL Server Management Studio anywhere.

Next I tried to install SQL Server Enterprise on a system that has only SQL Server 2000 installed. This system has seen nothing of the 2005 stuff prior to this install. After this install, I cannot find the Management Studio.

  • faiga16

I have VB2005 Express installed, and the visual Studio stuff that came in the box with the SQL 2005.  But no SQL2005 Express.

I have .NET 2 on the machine too, but the install app indicated that all that was OK.

    Thanks for your reply!

    Okay,

I uninstalled SQL Server 2005, I deleted the SQL 2005 Server folder. I uninstalled Norton Antivirus and restarted PC.

I install SQL Server Database Servies and Management tools only. The install crashes when it gets to Management Tools.

I need help anyone have any idea why I am getting this issue. I don't want to format my machine and still get the same error message.

Here is my Summary log file: (note - although I get the hardware requirements warning, my machine meets the hardware requirements. I tested this out on my Gateway laptop which only has 256mb of ram and I was able to install the management tools without any problems.)

    Hi,

I have the same problem - missing shortcut for the Management Studio.  However, my SQL Server 2005 Developer installation was on top of a clean Windows XP Pro installation - nothing else was previously installed - no express - no visual studio - just windows.

Do i need to remove/re-install sql server or can i somehow manually install the management studio

    Many thanks in advance.

    Christopher

Hi, I had installed SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition(Japanese) today, and I can't find SQL Server Management Studio and Books Online too. SQL Server 2005 services are running and configration tools(configuration manager and any) are installed.

I don't had installed SQL Server Express but I had installed SQL Server 2005 CTP oct(uninstalled).

I changed from default are install all component(like sample db) and install folder (c:\program files.. -> d:\program files...)

      Give me any hint.

  • ZenithSurfer

I installed VB2005 Express, but not SQL2005 Express.  I didn't see any reason to install the express version when I knew the full version was going to be available soon.

Also, VB2005 seems to be able to connect to SQL2000 just fine, in it's own funny little way.

Thanks to all that replied. After uninstalling SQL Server Express and then installing SQL Server, the Management Studio installed correctly. I still have a problem on a machine running SQL Server 2000. I want to do a side-by-side install until I move everything over to 2005. It seems that the management studio will not install if there is an instance of SQL Server 2000 on the same machine. I need to do some more reading I guess.

I installed SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition on Windows xp professional.

I'm having the same problems. Has anyone found a solution yet

Install order It depends. What do you ultimately want on your machine

Do you want Visual Studio, SQL Server, AND SQLExpress If yes, then install SQL Server first. Installing SQL Server first will install the full set of management tools.

Do you want only SQL Server and Visual Studio In this case it doesn't matter... With that said, if you install Visual Studio first, and select Default Install from the install menu, the Visual Studio installer WILL install SQL Express if SQL Server doesn't exist already on the machine. If you want to use the default install option, install SQL Server FIRST, then Visual Studio and you should be good to go.

By any chance had you installed SQL Express prior to installing the Standard Edition If so, you'll need to uninstall the tools installed by Express before you can install the tools for Standard.

    jeff.

So if you attended the launch event what should be the install order for Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005

    SQL then VS

    or

    VS then SQL

Zip up the log files in %PROGRAMFILES%\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap and send 'em to me (jeff . papiez @ microsoft . com) and I'll take a look.

I got the same problem. In my first attempt, i only installed the services and not the client tools. Later on, I was unable to install the client tools in subsequent installs - DEFINETLY a installation bug.

I suggest the following steps to fix the problem:

UnInstall SQL server completely (leave the 2.0 framework on your machine)

Disable/Remove any Anti-virus software during installation. Reboot your machine

Re-install SQL Server 2005 this time make sure you select all the service and tools.

    Thats it!!!
