Start SQL server 2005 CTP

Hi I need an answer to this:
I just downloaded and installed SQL server 2005 CTP.

When I start the MS SQL server database Engine it returns this error:

TITLE: Surface Area Configuration for Services and Connections - localhost
An Error occurred while performing this operation - (SQLSAC)
Program Location:
at Microsoft.SqlSac.MainPanel.UserControlService.ActOnService(ServiceAction action)

Can you please tell me how to fix this

I got the same message in my event log when I tried to start the service. Here's the thing though--I have a fully licensed, paid for and on a CD with a license key, retail edition of SQL Server Developer Edition. Could this be caused because I once did have the CTP I installed my full version when it arrived, and that was some time ago. It was working fine before. My actual 180 trial expired quite a bit ago, but I didn't sweat it because my purchased version was working fine. Now it is not. Do you think that uninstalling and reinstalling SQL server will do the trick I don't need Express because I also have VS Standard in the retail version.

    Hi,
thanks again , but I need to ask another question.
I understand from the Microsoft website that I have to uninstall this version of the SQL server and
download and install the newer version.

    Here is the question:
If I uninstall the Sql server :
What will happen to my Visual basic 2005 express edition beta 2 and Visual Web developer 2005 express edition beta 2.

The reason I ask is this because when installing all three of them I had to follow this:
    1. Sql Server 2005
and then 2. Visual basic and visual web developer.

    Thanks again for your help,
    Poek

    Hi,

thats what I thought before writing my first answer. As this is the CTP and the final product was already released you can’t use it anymore though the evaluation period has expired. You have some options:

    1. Get a full featured (and prized) product
    2. Get a new eval edition to test the server
    3. Use the SQLSERVERExpress engine which is free of charge and can be downloaded on the internet.

Nothing wil happen to these installations, but keep in mind that even those versions are outdated, so if you want to use them furtheron, you have to install the newer versions of VS2005 Express and VWD 2005 Express. Furtheron the version of the NET 2.0 Framework won’t work with those shipped with the RTM version. So both programs / applications have to be in the state 2.0 Framework RTM which is the preferable solution.
